RESTO My Carbon Fiber X4's

I have never run it in the water. I almost did a month or so ago but got held up by a bad batch of SBT fuel valves. The valves were new but plugged up and it drove me crazy until I found it. I have a bad starter/flywheel situation in that ski and have now wasted most of my starts. Plus I picture lots of shavings from it in my mag cup area.

Before I tear it back apart I do want to wet test it to determine if the Coffman's rec pipe is staying or not. I do not have a personal boat ramp in my new back yard yet or it would have already been done. I have been buying all the beach carts and ski stands that have been coming up and I really like this one.

I've been eyeing the little beach at the end of our road with this cart in mind. People have launched kayaks and paddle boards there so...?... Don't want the neighbors to hate me but I need that 3 to 5 feet area just off the shore to run back and forth in. That way I can get back easily if it stalls and won't restart, is sinking, whatever.

I did finally get it to the sign shop and I'm pretty good with what he did for me for a hundred dollar bill

I have been building my HX from scratch over the last couple months as well as making little improvements and riding My Big Red Racing GSX and my "extremely modified X4". I plan to give those threads a long over due update soon.

Thanks guys. It sat around and got dusty. I used an alt seat because I want to get the tuning done before I use the custom Jettrim one.

The first thing I noticed is how it sat higher in the water. There was a lot more space between the bond line and the water. I was able to sit my 215lbs on it and still not have water run into the footwells. When I fired it up it was loud. It sounds like a racer for sure, not gonna be sneaking up on any wildlife that's for sure. The vibration was not too bad but it's still a little like a dragster engine in a pool play toy.

I had the wife with me on the RXX so I felt confident heading down the river a few miles. It was not terribly far off on the carb adjustments just a little rich. I was able to cruise around and it was all there when I stabbed the throttle. I was delighted that it felt fast and handled OK but I didn't push things too hard. I will try to dial it in through carb adjustments and then measure the performance with this setup before I rip it back apart.

The Bad: The steering was out of adjustment but that's an easy fix. It leaks! that sucks I tried to seal everything well. I'll deal with that hopefully it's all coming from one location. The flywheel is still grinding on the starter and it drags. I've got a fancy battery in there but the drag still pulled the voltage down to where I lost spark and it would not start when I went to load it back on the trailer.

I have personally seen this ski and touched it lol..It is beyond nice..Told Matt i would never wanna put it in the water..Guess he finally did. Good job!

I went to loosen the clamp on the steering adjustment and it was already loose. Turns out I just dropped the ball and never centered the steering. Oh well it's done now.

Same thing with the Racepak Hottach. I never went through the setup so it did not read my rpm right. I couldn't get the wife to ride yesterday so I just cleaned it up real good and adjusted what I could on the trailer.

The leak was bad enough that I saw water in there after just parking the car. At the end of the ride the water took 30 sec to a minute to drain. Obviously that's way too big to ignore. I need to be able to float on this thing. I'm curious about the location because I thought I did a good job sealing up everything. There's nobody to blame but me, I attached everything.

I had a productive weekend with this. Kingspeedshop came over with his 98SPX and we rode the river a bit. The ski felt great but had an ignition miss that got worse fast. I was able to limp back without a tow and there was not as much water in the hull this time.

I thought the grinding starts had created enough little metal bits that the pickup was fouled. It was pretty bad in there but I found a couple other things to tighten up as well. 73Deisel was kind enough to sell me an aluminum flywheel that he had. It was a little cleaner then mine and I paired it with an eight tooth starter. Now it spins smooth as it should.

I still have not had a chance to test the limits of the Coffman's rec pipe so I left it on for now. I did replace the 80 jet I had in the stinger with a 67.5 after looking the instructions over again. I know it hits hard off the bottom and pulls through the mid range good.

I could only get 6700rpm and 53mph out of it today. The pipe was so hot after a couple WOT runs that it would sizzle when I splashed water on it. I'm done with that pipe, time to see what other brands can be made to fit.

I might end up taking a Spec 1 or 2 and beating the chamber in till it fits. I have a couple odd dry pipes to try first.

I got a lot done. At first I tried the Jet-Pro pipe but it did not fit.

Then I tried my Coffman race pipe It was a little closer but still didn't fit.

Next I pulled out a Rossier. This one had it's halves welded together and some extra fittings drilled and tapped into it.

Luckily it fit like a charm! There was plenty of clearance between the pipe and the deck. It's jetted with a 95 at the mid pipe and 165 at the stinger. I capped off the water line to the waterbox, broke out my "candy camo" and sprayed away...

I worked till dark and have it back together. I'll be testing soon.

Well the Rossier pipe runs a little better. I got 7000rpm out of it so I definitely have another issue because I should have more. I don't think it's carb jetting, I'm suspect of the carbon rotary valve I put in there. Since there is no case porting on this one a stock 159 degree valve should be the ticket for a smother running engine.

Lack of speed is still a problem. My prop has a steeper pitch then a regular XO and a tighter wear ring. 7000rpm should be good for at least 58-59mph and I'm hitting 54. I keep looking for the anchor dragging behind me lol. This may be why they made their own sponsons(Beach House dragging too much?). My #6 JD grate has the least amount of scoop in it.

The other suspect is the Solas pump. It's very rare and very cool but it could be holding me back. I've never really heard others bragging about their speed with one. Once my engine is right I can see me trying stock and Skat pumps to try to get to 60something or at least 60 for crying out loud.

Yes it rips out of the hole, zero cavitation. If the ski is trimmed more then half way up if jumps out of flat water during acceleration just as it should. There is no low speed hesitation so I don't think water injection will be necessary on this one. The Rossier does not sound quite as cool as the Coffman did.

I pulled the valve and swapped it. You can see the difference here:

It's not the center that makes a difference but the flat part.

It seems to run better. I'm gonna tune tomorrow and see where I get.

Matt my early experience with Rossier pipe ( 1996) was, water injection really helped mid range bang . The problem with spinning that pipe up around 7200 is lower chamber must sizzle hot. Without ecwi the pipe softens after hard wot. Ecwi gives pipe a chance to cool on throttle chops thus not heat soaking engine and slowing mtr in corners. Your next obstacle will be sustained high temp on lower chamber will wreak havoc on mid chamber coupler. Cost me a few races. Look carefully a mating surface of pipe. The casting of pipe really leaves no lip to help hold coupler. I took air grinder all the way around to attain a sharper edge so once coupler is hose clamped dwn it has a bit of a barbed fitting . This will prevent " lower chamber drop" with heat thus not blowing couplers.
