RESTO My Big Red Racing Carbon Fiber GSX Builds

Thanks Racer. It's really gonna pop when I hit it with the "finishings". I've got a WTB out now for a GSX carbon fiber hood.

That will be tight. Spectrum technologies had one on eBay a little while back but it needed work. They also had a cf gsx hull that was cracked badly

Thanks Dan!(and nice XP800) Racer does also. He actually bought a couple new skis from Big Red in 96 helping fund the existence of this thing out on the coarse....small world. I'm just tickled with the way it rode. I'm starting to see my future fleet with more clarity.

Today was a good day for it. I installed the splash guard and used a black nose bumper. I then replaced the blue railing inserts with black. I put a black bumper across the back with a blue center insert. Then I installed Hydro-Turf. I have a nice wide blue UMI handle bar pad that I will rob off another ski for this one.

None of this takes the cake though. I cut a deal with Jess(Minnetonka4me's brother) to get his brand new carbon fiber ATM hood. Now we are talking!

Well I finally got a day to work on the Big Red GSX today after several days of looking forward to it. Since I want to keep and maybe even compete with this one I started switching first string parts over to it. I pulled the Novi head off my X4 to get the domes for the Big Red billet head that went on the GSX. I put on a Neptune pipe and a 6 vein Skat Magnum pump.

Tomorrow I will try these Novi max flow carbs and install a Racepak Hottach egt and rpm gauge(hopefully).

Now that this thing is getting so nasty, it might be time to send your seat cover into Jettrim and get a sick matching seat cover. Since Big red is long gone Im sure you would have no issues getting them to put the logo on the seat. Hell I know for a fact Gary still has a drawer full of "specially built jettrim cover for big red racing" patches he could stitch on.

Are you gonna put manual trim on? How about tabs? Have you used the silicone exhaust hoses yet?

I would love a custom Jettrim seat. Actually I have an old Fischetti GSX that needs one also. I just need to sell some Seadoos in the spring before I can invest further into goodies.

I am not putting trim or tabs on it yet because it did not act like it needed it. Of coarse I was just running it up to 50ish a few times. Now I need to see how she rides in the 60's and in choppy conditions. I have the parts if it wants it but no hole has even been drilled yet for trim.

The salted three switch holder on the left side of my bars is not coming off peacefully. I'm making the most of it by using the up and down trim buttons as a holeshot switch and a display screen changer for the Racepak Hottach.

The new hood came in yesterday and looks awesome. I plan to cut the hottach into a gauge plug so it fits the big hole. I'm not sure what gauge to stick in the other hole. I wish I had fixed the fuel baffle now so I could just use a fuel gauge.

Thanks Spimtavious! I hope I can hang with the four strokes with this thing but we will see.

I noticed the stainless steel Neptune pipe actually sounds more stock and smooth. With the Rossier it popped like a peppy little 720. I don't really care for more volume as long as it goes 60 something and gets there quick.

There is a strong movement toward sticking Kawasaki 1100 triples in everything now. Guys are making 65mph+ racers that they can ride everyday because they run on regular pump fuel. I'm trying to match this with the 787. It's not easy. Now that I have the thing nearly together the real work starts in the way of testing and tuning.

Today I got the hood on and the Hottach installed minus a little more wiring. I painted the blue gauge plug black. It kinda sticks out further than I would like but I'm riding with it for now. I guess I've gotta pull that steering, tip the tank forward and yank that baffle out and fix it. I know, I know I should have done it the first time. I'm not sure what else to put in that hole except a fuel gauge. Any ideas? I don't want to add a lot of weight to the ski obviously.

im not sure if its any different being a cf hull, on mine i pulled the mpem and slid the tank forward put a 2x4 under the back side of the tank to make it sit level which gave me 100% access to the fuel baffle. of course it helps if the tank is empty.;)
not sure if that is easier than pulling the steering but it was pretty easy in my case.
nice ski btw.

Thanks jammin. I will try that for sure before I pull the UMI back off. I siliconed it and would love to leave it if I can.

I'm surprised by that! I was never impressed with the 1100ZXI motor (didn't feel like 120HP). I thought it was rather weak for what it was. Now the Ultra 150 engine that thing is a torque monster. If you can shoe horn a 1100zxi engine why aren't people using the Ultra 150 engine? It's a much better platform IMO. Just curious..

They were not impressive back in the day but they have figured out how to make them run. Rad Dudes makes a conversion plate for mounting them where a 717/720 was.

I finished the wiring up today and got some ride time in. I still love the way it handles. I only got to around 60mph and was revving too high so I need to try a taller impeller.
