newbie 96 gtx build

The motor, pipe, starter, carbs, and pump and lots of smaller parts will work as spares on the GSX (a GREAT ski!) The electrical is a little different so I don't think the MPEM will interchange. But someone like Minnetonka4me will know for sure. The GSX has the variable trim system and the GTX has reverse. But I am pretty sure the pumps are the same.

That GSX looks really clean and the price is good. Find out what "motor won't open up" means. Could just be a carb problem or may be a full motor job. A compression test will tell you a huge part of the story. This would be an awsome project ski if you had experience with them.

But with you being new at it, I would look for a running ski if I were you. It is getting late in the spring to be starting a newbie project ski if you expect to have fun on it all summer. You have time, but will have to work hard if it needs a motor, since you don't have a good one to put into it.

Yup all the engine parts interchange, and I forget the year of your GTX but if its the electronics are close to the same...as long as they arent late model skis.

That GSX is a great deal if it comes with the trailer.

I may be a noob at these sea doo's, but that $500 ski looks like a great bargain, especially if all it needs is a top end kit. I was on a site last night that had full top end kits for less than $300 that came with everything you need. I want to say the site was full bore but I may be wrong? Either way, if it is indeed $500 with a trailer, you may do alright if the information is true.

ok heres the point im at now. I haven't even started to mess with the 99 gts because of the no key issue, the po said he cannot find it so he is going to pay the seadoo dealership to make a new key,, but i think hes just leading me on. So I cannot even do a compression test to see what shape it is in. I spent 1000 on both of these skis and a double trailer. I am debating or trying to sell them both straight out as is locally, but i fugure thats going to be pretty tough to do considering the one is confirmed needing complete rebuild and hull only a few good parts on it, and the other being an unknown. With no key... So my next option would be to part them out. Which ive never done before i usually just horde my atv parts. I would just like to have my 1000 back so i can try and buy one that is already running and take it somewhere to make sure its running right. I hate it that ive put the money i have into the gtx but you live and you learn, i just got the carb kits in the mail along with a popoff tester and oil filter and a few other odds and ends. Any ideas on how i can make my money back with these so i can get a dependable running ski

You don't need a key (lanyard) to do a compression test. Just put a fresh battery in the ski, remove the spark plugs, and short the two posts on the solenoid, the motor should turn over, that's if the motor is not locked up.

it a four hour drive i would have to wait till this weekend, i would like to make some room in my garage before i got another nonrunning ski i like to sell the two i have for parts if need be and find one for about 1500 thats already running

Keep your head up. Do the compression test on the gts. Read Loudoo's post above. You dont need a key to comp test it. Just short out the solenoid and test it. If it pumps OK, you can get a key made by sending the MPEM to Minnetonka4me He will have you all the stuff back ready to install in less than a week. He turns them around in the same day usually. The GTX stuff is worth some money. We can help you value the parts if you want. The gts and trailer are worth what you have in it now. You will still need carb kits and the popoff tester.

You cant always win with machines...Even with all my experence I bought a machine last week that was much worse than I found. Ill still make a few dollars but not what I should be making.

Keep your head up and don't let this experience put a sour taste in your month for the sport. This forum is a wonderful wealth of knowledge and will get you on the water with any route you decide to go

96 XP800!
Keep the 2 strokes alive!

Ok tearing the gtx down scrapping all the bad gonna sell the good, keep what I might be able to use. Wondering if there's anyone who may want to buy most of it to sell I don't have the room to horde all the parts and start tearing down the gts

This is what I know is good. The computer ,dess, starter, carbs need rebuilt, one piston, pump, airbox, pto, gas and oil tanks. Probably more

all that would fit in a 27 gallon crate from Home depot for $10.

Personally I'd throw away the Gas tank, unless its a T-tank they really don't sell fast or for that much.

sell the computer/carbs/pump, make a cup holder out of the piston.

Ok tried to get the compression on the gts but it won't turn over just clunks, starter send to be working alright tried to turn the pto by hand can't. Bout to take the head off and it started raining. The stuff inside the box with the solenoid looked brand new .

does it give alittle in any direction by hand? Check the pump area also, if its seized you wont be able to turn the engine either.
