XPL 4Tec spinoff thread

I haven't noticed a thread discussing this, so I figured I would start one. Mods, if it's a duplicate feel free to delete this. I was looking at the 4Tec XPL thread and began cruising the ole interwebs looking at Seadoo motor swaps and it got me to thinking: who's going to be the first to shove a Spark motor in an X4 hull? As much as I love a 787, a 4 stroke X4 would be something different, if nothing else.

I'm in the classified discussion, I'd personally love a flashed 110 hp ace 900 X4!!!!

Love to see that. How crazy to hear a really raspy 4 stroke in an X4. Thought about it...but its trying to find a resonable deal on a donor boat. I think that ACE mtr may bolt right up in XPL. With a turbo at 175 hp that would be a great Doo!

Now THAT is an idea. If you could only keep the hull in 1 piece.

Don't get me wrong on this idea... I love 787's. Heck, I have 5 787 Doo's in the garage right now, but there are some benefits to an EFI 4 stroke power plant IMO. Heavier and less power in stock form, yes. Are power gains easier to get out of said motor? I think yes. I would LOVE to find a wrecked Spark and get my '95 XP800 hull back on the water...
 
well there just happens to be a wrecked spark for cheap in the florida classifieds section....check it out. I was under the impression that these Spark motors are pretty powerful, just limited by a computer "governor" type deal....might be able to get that ACE 110 to purr a little more. could be completely wrong though, i've been known to say an ignorant thing or two on occasion....
 
i'm sorry but i'm still going to be the nay sayer about all this and i know that people said a 951 would never work in an x4 hull and where proved wrong. same thing with the 4tec xpl's, gpsho's, gprxp's... but the thing about all those conversions is they are massive improvements over the stock configurations (100-150hp), often being able to hit 85-90 mph with just the 4-stroke power-train or very few mods to it.

the main draw about modernizing is that the new technology is better than the old. how ever in this case, i fail to see where the cost, time and work of adapting a 900 ace into an x4/xpl hull is worth it or even an improvement over the stock configurations.

fuel economy is going to be about the same once the turbo kit and tune is added ( which is 3500 might i add) plus 4000 for a spark donor ski and you're already into it 7.5k and haven't even started work, this is assuming you already had the hull it was all going into. to get the good fuel economy you'll have to stick at the 60-90 hp tunes. well in that case you pretty much have a 95 xp 717(85hp) or 94 xp 657(~65hp). and in my book thats a step backwards.

reliability of this motor with a turbo is also a question mark. its only been out a little over a year in the skis. 2-3 in the sleds. we really don't know how this motor is going to stand the test of time. either in stock configurations or modded, yes i'm sure that they have been rigorously tested but the testing core is much smaller than the open mass production world where anything can happen. yes it is a 4-stroke and they tend to be more reliable than 2 strokes. but i also pose this question, who has had poor reliability out of a properly cared for 787? 951's can live long lives if properly cared for as well. not to mention i can rebuild both of those motors with top grade parts and slightly mod them for better performance for under 1500, massively modded for 3000. also to get a ace 900 past 140 hp, which you'd have to do imo to make up for the extra weight, you're getting into building a race motor which is even more expensive, especially if you're doing it without sacrificing reliability.

maybe there is something i'm missing but this is just my 2 cents.
 
But, it would be one of a kind. And sometimes that's all that matters lol

The 951 pushes my Sportster just fine for me, I have to think the stock ACE would push an X4 just as well? Might depend on the weight of the rider on the hairy end of the scale but the Sportster still planes out fine with 3 adults and my load of junk. 130hp, a lot more wetted surface and weight.

For a project like this I wouldn't plan on spending money tuning one, unless someone wanted to donate their tune for the project.

Yes but not like a 787. It's a 20hp difference between the two. Its like having a 717. Does it do the job? Yes. But just like anything, more hp = more fun.
 
20 hp difference? I believe you can flash then extremely cheap to 110 hp

A 96XP is a superior craft to the Spark. It can take a hit, you can pass a rock through the pump when you need to, and there are just as much or more ways to customize one. I'm not even gonna bring up the fact that you can have two or three of them for the price of one plastic disposable Spark. Oops I just did.
 
Great discussion guys! Killin me because now my brain is kicking into 3rd project mode mental engineering. Im a strong advocate of two stroke performance-weight ratio. There is always a saftey zone for us old school guys in sticking with what " we" works. However watching Seadoodoc.JR ( 20 years old ) flies around my shop at 100 mph working on honda cars... swapping motors.. bolting on turbos. Tunning on laptops. Its a new generation and I dont have a clue what the hell they are doing. That scares me. But this turbo 4 stroke stuff is next gen 787 FP novi total loss strokerr SS replacement! Like it or not us old dogs better learn it. Imhop

I'll tell ya what i'd like to see in the 2-stroke realm, and your son might be able to get it done. I'd like to see an modded RFI 787 X4. you could use a megasquirt for engine control, and maybe also timing. Probably could use a carbed MPEM to handle the start/stop/kill switch stuff. get the tune setup to run whatever head and pipe you want on it without having to worry about a weather change throwing the tune off and lunching your motor.
 
We could always toss a Tesla 400 HP motor that's only the size of a watermellon in the hull.

Sure the batteries would only last 20 min at best, but that would be one hell of a 20 minutes!

in PA we have a lot of electric only bodies of water... they have no real speed limit, just electric power only.

I would DIE so happy to show up with an electric GTX that could even do like 40... would be hilarious!

with current battery tech you could probably get enough juice for a few hours of riding and a smaller motor of around 150-200hp into a modern 4stroke hull. it might even weigh close to the original 4tec sc and associated parts if you also did a CF hull lay-up.
 
I was a part of building an all electric off road buggy/ polaris RZR wanna be. The electric thing is very do- able actually in terms of weight. Significant runtime is another story
