Crack in pump cause cavitation?

So I had some bad cavitation on my 96 XP the last time out last year, but I just left it for this year as the season was over. This morning I pulled the pump off as I was going to take it to the dealer to get a new wear ring put in it. Once I got it out I didn't think it looked too bad but I'm no expert. I did find a crack in the housing and one in the corner where it mounts onto the hull. Could the crack there be related to my issues with cavitation? The cracks look to have been there for some time so I don't think this happened while taking it apart, I was careful with it too. Here are some pictures of it. I also got pictures of the impeller so the experts here can tell me what they think of that.

In my opinion the crack is bad enough to replace the pump, so cavitation is not an issue. PM minnetonka he's probably got a good used one, also it's a mystery to my why your dealer would put a new wear ring in that pump.

I am planning to replace the pump, I was more just curious if the crack would have caused the cavitation? I'm trying to learn as much as I can about these things. The dealer didn't put a wear ring in it, I was going to have them do it but as soon as I saw the cracks I didn't bother to take it there.

It could cause cavitation. Since it's not going to be tight, and in align... it can suck air. Also... it's not safe. Time to replace it.

^^^^ I think the same. It's flexing when you put a load on it and causing cavitation. I got a good used one out of a 95 800 with new wear ring for $100.

I always ask the question: how did this happen? I do not want to do this again. It appears that some significant force caused the breakage; dropping the ski, hitting something, bent drive shaft.

Hopefully one of the experts will agree or disagree, but fis-U (this is a very technical term shortened from "If I was you") I would be casting a critical eye on the trueness of the drive shaft and engine alignment as long as things are apart.

if you can replace a pump, you can replace a wear ring, stop spending money at the dealer :)

I actually carry a spare 951 pump on long trips. I can't swap a wear ring or impeller at the ramp, but I can swap a whole pump!

the spare pump has an impeller, ring, etc, everything!

and the fact that it fits any of my 4 skis, works out well too :)

I've been places 4 hours from home where a spare wear ring / impeller would have saved the weekend, but then realized I had no way to really swap a wear ring at the boat ramp. But I could swap the whole dang thing!

I had a pump from a 01 XP I sent to pieces, threw in a new concord 15/20, and ta-da!

Oh ok. I had seen there was special tools involved in changing it that I didn't have, and I wanted it done for this weekend. I did find a replacement pump, the wear ring was in better shape than the one in my old pump I think. Now I have to get the impeller out of the pump, and I don't have the special tool or a vise, any suggestions?

I also assume then you don't have a spare drive shaft?

the sea-doo impeller removal tool is like $10 eBay, and then you need a vice as well.

using it once pays for it's self. vs. a dealer.

That's right I don't. I don't have a problem buying the special tool aside from I really have to get this back together this weekend so I can ride it Monday. So not sure I'd be able to get one in time.

You don't know anyone with a vise? A neighbor? a local car repair shop? You can use an old drive shaft and I have seen a youtube video of a guy using his good one and a pipe wrench but I would not recommend that.

I got the special tool, my dealer carried the solas one for $15. Didn't think they would. I'm going to try a pipe wrench and a helper instead of the vise.

When I did mine I used an adjustable wrench on shaft side and the tool in the other side, then i put one long tube in each of the sides (about 4 feet each) and with some help it broke loose. We tried without the tubes and it didnt let go.

the pipe wrench may chew up the end of the shaft. once it gets too rounded nothing will get them apart. You have 2 toys with the same pumps on them...buy the vise. The money you save from one trip to the dealer will pay for it, I promise.
