Can't get impeller off of pump... Help

Trying to get my impeller out in order to change my wear ring. Have it in the vise, have tried breaker bar and heat from a propane torch, no luck. Tried heat and an impact wrench tonight, no luck. Is there something I'm missing or is there a secret? It doesn't seem to budge at all. It's a 96 GSX. Thanks!
 
Changed mine couple of weeks ago and you think you are going to brake something then it starts turning. In the manual it says to heat the shaft to loosen the thread lock compound. Hope this helps.

Okay, will try that tomorrow night.... Thanks Lou... Thanks Gene, it does feel like its going to break..... Lou, will the pipe put more pressure on it than an impact wrench?
 
Yes it will, an impact wrench is not a good idea, it puts too much pressure on the splines. Actually I keep a piece of pipe in the garage just for this purpose.

Try using a 3'-4' piece of pipe and a breaker bar, it should break free.

I do agree with Lou here, no shop would be complete without a cheater pipe. But, under most circumstances, my 1/2" drive breaker bar does the trick. And the other comment about heating. Yes, if it was put on by the shop manual and used thread lock, the procedure calls for heat to be added to the center of the impeller, through the top part where your rubber seal gromet is (take it out of course). This heat is only added for a few seconds. If I remember right, it takes just over 300*F to break the seal on red loctite. But, I rarely heat them anymore. And I highly agree with the answer about an impact wrench!!!!! No, NO and NO.... The only thing I can see you using an impact wrench on is.......... is the trailer tires.

Don't use an impact. A very strong one will rip out the splines.

I use a LONG tube on a breaker bar. Some times it's the only way.

Oh... I find using a little PB-Blaster will help. It's a spry penetrating oil, and it's WAY better than WD-40, and it seems to eat at the thread locker.
 
I have a left over piece from my garage door opener track that's a square tube (replaced 7' kit with 10' kit) that fits the end of my 1/2" ratchet perfectly :) it's about 3 feet....
 
Thanks everyone for the advice..... I just broke my vise trying to turn it.... Back to the drawing board...
 
When I did mine I also sprayed WD-40 inside where the shaft goes and let is set for several days. Mine was pretty bad off, to me anyway. Sorry for the causality....

Can't help much as I've never removed mine but am about to and it's been on there for awhile so I'm not looking foward to it...but I use the handle of my floor jack as my breaker bar on a 1/2" rachet
 
No worries. Every time my dad says "Warsh" (wash) I cringe.

Firefox has built in spell check, else my writing would be as poor as my thinking ;).
 
In New York "vice" is normally associated with politicans or police, "vise" is a clamping/ holding device.:cheers:
 
Just a little play on words between different parts of USA and/or other countries. :)

I'm going to grab a pop/soda and a torch /flashlight to work on cleaning my ground/earth to my starter. If it's bent then I'll put it in my vise/vice to straighten it. Then I'll warsh/wash and wax my Hull/haul. If your/you're going to your/UR house then please bring me back a cold beer/suds/brew/brewski/pint. If I find a small hole/whole, I'll patch it with which/wich ever product I have on hand.

I use Firefox and the only words it caught with this was "warsh" and "brewski". Not real words in English.
