went to look at my first jetski today. not sure if i should jump on this thing or what. need some advise. 2002 gtx 4 tec limited. needs some tlc been sitting for two yrs. not to familiar with jetski's motorcycles have been my thing.
guy want 1500.00 with trailer. says it has 44 hrs on it and has new prop and wear ring. my problem is couldnt get it running battery dead. its one of my workers so i guess i can trust him. should i just buy and work the bugs out from sitting. seems like a cheap price. he bought a motorcycle and his brother sold his ski so he lost interest.whats you guys input on this. what other things should i look for when i go back.

Buy new battery or borrow a good one, then test it in the water...if it runs well buy it. Do not hook a charger to it to start it..

Yeah you need to make sure it runs before you make any decisions. Or offer him $500 as is.

got a fresh new battery for this thing gonna bring to water wed. am and try to get it started. so i know were i stand.

Make sure you get it running and take it out for a while. A lot of problems won't be noticeable right away.

That is awesome you are here reading before you buy. We get so many people here after they buy stuff and have tons of problems. The pros here can hopefully keep you from over paying on a piece of junk.

You're probably not looking for a project, but it's worth $1500 as is, all day long... if it runs, its a steal!

well i put fresh battery in ski and only life i got was two beeps. and 4 shorts beeps. any ideas???? tried to start and starter clicked like it was binding up kept pushing start a few times it turned twice but only for 2 sec. but i did get hooked up with guy who fixes these things. from what im told he is the man around here and reasonable on prices. so looks like its going to his house. if i dont figure it out.:confused::confused::confused::confused:

I'd hate to think what those cylinders look like if they've never been fogged. Pull, inspect and replace plugs...at the least. I'd also consider draining the gas and put in a coupla gallons of fresh 92+.

have not bought it yet. the guys who owns it son works for me. he is pretty cool about it. he knows he let it sit to long and is willing to let me take it and see if i can get it running before i pay him for it. so at the least im gonna bring to local guy who fixes them and see if he can get it running. if it needs too much work. then i will at least have to pay for him to diagnose ski. and not get stuck with it. if too much to fix owner says he dont mind if idont buy after that.
other than that and needing a rear seat cover vinyl cracked its in good shape.
i dont mind throwing a couple $$ into it for the price he wants.

Plugs...

Take your spark plugs out, remove the shaft guard on the back of motor, or anywhere the shaft can be exposed, then spin it over by hand. With the plugs out, the compression is nil. You might even try the starter again once you pull the plugs.

A motor sitting up may get some parts sticky and not want to turn over. You can drop a teaspoon or less of Marvel Mystery oil in each of the 3 cylinders and try to turn it over. If it turns over, put one of your spark plugs on the wire, then lay it on the engine block, turn it over and look for spark across the electrode.

got it running

got a call from mechanic yest. say there was water in cylinders.he drained oil put fresh in and it started right up. says gonna need a few more oil changes. which i can do a my house to get rid of water. he gonna look over to see if he can find were it came from. but my question is how much do you guys think this ski is worth now that it had water sitting in motor for 2yrs thats how long it sat for and who knows when water was introduced. guy wants 1500.00w/trailer.but i am thinking this thing is gonna need a top end.
2002 gtx limited 4tec

Yeah I would be thinkin new motor. Especially a 4 stroke. I would stick to my original offfer of $500.

Ok went to mechanics today. Thing runs like a champ. Starts with 2 sec of switch push. He says I need to ride in water to make sure it ok. So I'm gonna do it wed. Am ...should be fun temp is gonna be 37 degrees that morn.

i wish i was as inspired to ride my ski's in the temps we have up in mass. now. i think im going to buy a wet suit. thatll do
