RESTO Our 787 x4 restoration modification thread

I fired up the gsx today and it was barely running with a low idle. So I did a compression check both right at 150. The front plug was fouled. I put new plugs in and the idle is now 1900. It was running fine so I checked the volts on the battery. It was at 12.4 when not running. At idle it dropped to 12.2. At 3000 rpms it dropped to 11.4. So I assume the rectifier or stator is bad.

well theres your bog issue.:) looks like you scored with that ski, wish mine was that easy.
i'll bet rectifier.

Took the gsx to the lake today. So all we did was put new plugs and a new battery in it. It started fine in the water, the idle was a bit low at 1400 rpms. I idled out, as soon as I got out past the no wake zone I took it up to 3000 rpms and everything was going smoothly, everything on the gauge was registering fine. Took it to 6500 rpms and everything felt good, I ended up maxing out at 6800 rpms but there was some light chop. After 10 minutes of riding the 12v low came on. I rode with that on for about a hour and had no issues.

As for spx800 I use meguiars. I have a thread on my process

Tonight we put some mats on the clean 96xp we bought a few months back.

We bought black on yellow diamond cut from pwcmuscle.com using the discount code hydro15

We encountered the same tails that racerxxx had on his mats. They were a pain to pick off. They were easy to pick off just time consuming. Every diamond had a straggler on the backside.

All the work was worth it though. They look great on it.

This seadoo still needs to get a thorough cleaning but it is sold already to they guy who is having us restore his 96 xp. He wants his to match this one. We are also putting 2 toned diamond mats on that one.

I had the same tails hanging off my diamond cut ones and I didn't waste anytime picking them off, I just took the pressure washer to them and it took them all off

I did not want those things all over the warehouse or in the back. I started to just drop them on the floor to sweep up later but I looked down and they were stuck all over to me.

great job, enjoyed all the post's and the detailed pic's, can't thank you enough for taking the time.

Thanks, We like working on these and seeing the before to after shots. So I figured we would share what we do along the way. If we come across something new or try something new I try getting pics to post it.

I should post the before/after of my 98 GSXL un-restore.... it went from bad to worse in 48 hours and now is just a dirty shell.

We had a couple that went from restore to part out. Our problem is we start one project and then 2 weeks later when we are 75% done we get 2 more and start on those. Right now we are working on five, 3 96 xp's, 97 xp, and a 98 xp. The 96 xp full resto is our priority right now. We are waiting on parts though. Mostly decals and finding the right yellow vinyl for the seat.

wow! Do you guys sell them or something?

Yes we do. We buy keep, fix them clean them, sell them. We usually ride them a couple times before selling them. 1 to test them and 2 just to have fun on them. I swear each time we finish one we want to keep it.

As for price it all depends on what was done and what model. We do not even buy anything under a 787 it is just hard to sell them.

We have sold most of ours for right around $2000.

As for parts, top ends go to full bore. Cranks we have bought hot rod cranks, and oem reman cranks.

I like that idea. I just had a 787 eat a crank that I got from some no-name remanufacturer claiming he used "good quality parts" to reman his cranks. It must've had maybe 30 hours on it. Problem is I had the thing for over a year and the warranty is out. The damn seals barely lined up when I went to install it, that should have been my first sign of trouble. So you say the hot rod cranks are worth the $500 fee?

Also, have you guys ever had an x4 that just refused to give up that damned bog off-idle? Mine would lean-stumble EVERY TIME. Nothing I did seemed to fix it, including putting on carbs with accel pumps... No case leaks either, pressurized it and made sure. Been scratching my head on it forever...

Just read some of this thread for before and after. Wow you are like an artist restoring these old skies.
Those faded hulls look like brand new after the magics!

I really need to go through all the posts in the thread to see what can i do for my 97 spx.

Fantastic work!!!

Thanks, it is a fun hobby. I really enjoy doing the exterior work. I like the instant gratification of seeing the oxidation dissapearing and the color coming through. We still are finding new ways of doing things through other members posts. Minnetonka4me racerxxx Matt Braley Spimothy Leary all have influenced us to try new things. This forums members have taught us alot. I am glad people share what has worked for them. It has saved us alot of money and extra effort. I still need to try the wipe new but that is coming soon lol.

Looking good Matt! My dog was covered in those turf tails for days. Every time she came out to visit she some how found more and they just clung to her.

Today we changed the fuel lines on the 96xp that we just put the 2 toned mats on.

The carbs were in rough shape.

And after. We just used carb cleaner and a wire brush

The filters were really bad
