I think so too, I am going to play with our plotter too and put some decals on it. The black one has red decals so I will strip those and make some yellow and silver decals for it. The seat is going to be black with yellow stencils and then black and yellow mats. She should look tasty

Gunna look sweet. There was someone parting out a 98 xpl in my neighborhood i was actually going to pm you about. well our city not neighborhood if you were reallyyyy needing a gray hood. I guess my only thing i know about the 951's is that the counterbalance seems to go out often. would probably change that oil out if it was mine! what a steal you got!

We are going to pull the carbs this weekend and change the fuel lines out. Is there any hurdles we have to jump through to get them off? Does the pipe have to come off? I have not really looked at it but want to be prepared for what needs to be done. We have the s shaped wrench, it came with the ski.

This has original grey lines, and it has blue oil in the tank, we will be draining that oil asap.

The carbs come off without having to pull the pipe. I don't have my S wrench yet so I still have to pull carbs to get the pipe off and on. Not a lot off room with the pipe on but doable.

My experience is with the GSX hull so maybe you have more room on this style.

Very sexy avatar btw

Thanks,
I was hoping we would not have to pull the pipe. Just looks a little tight in there. I hope to have this wrapped up this weekend. Tuesday I get out of work early and I would like to ride this with the other sponson on it.

Well this project is now again underway.

1 I blew it up, I know all about grey fuel lines and did not change them. We were up at Higgins lake for a week and on day 1 i felt a bog. I said I was going to change them on day 2 because it was suppose to rain. Day 2 came and was gorgous, so I said ahhh whats one more day. Had it out for a couple hours when we decided to race straight across to the other side of the lake. We get to that side and the water was nice and smooth and I was hitting 7000rpms and it felt fast, then rpms down to 5000 then 3000 then stalled. I knew instantly what happened. Cooked the top end. Towed it back a long way and ripped it apart when we got off the water. The pto piston was toast. So we just got the top end back from fullbore a couple weeks ago.

So now we are in full resto mode.

First thing was to take the hood apart and get one of our hoods fixed and painted. shift95 is taking care of that for us.
He took the black hood we got, that one had damage as well. Not a huge hole but a couple cracks and the nose was damaged.

Usually the noses on these are messed up but this one is nice

The hood is a pain to take off on these.

But got it off tonight

This has a billet button holder, and a finger throttle. I may have the bars powder coated black. Would be nice to have anodized black bars though.

The mats are going to come off and new hydroturf black and yellow mats are going

I have some Ideas on graphics. All the stock ones are coming off. I think a jet trim seat is the way to go too.

Terrible news.
Dam tempo lines....
Did you pull the carbs back out after and see evidence that grey lines were root cause ?
I Have Owned Several 851'S And Always Tried To Get Rid Of Them While Running Simply Because They Were 951.

you mind talking about what the best way to pull the hood off is? I have a replacement for my 97 hood where the strut poked through bracket and just haven't started on it since it looks like such a PITA.

First start off by undoing all the electrical connections. Then you need to unhook the steering cable, I just removed the 2 on the clamp holding it in place and the the top 10mm that is holding the cable to the column. Then unhook the choke and throttle cable from the carbs and pull those out. Then remove the trim buttons from the housing, since those are hard wired on this model they either need to be cut or pulled through the hood. Now you can either remove the 2 bolts holding the shock to the hull or take out the pin holding the shock to the hood. Pull the electrical harness down into the hull. Then remove the 4 10mm bolts that hold the hinge to the hull. The hood is very heavy, so make sure you have someone to help lift it out. I didnt have anyone there so I left the bolts going through the hinge into the hull in place, I just to the nut off. This kept it in place long enough for me just to pull it straight up.

Good deal on the black hood....those arent the easiest to come by!! Neither is finding guys that need 787 cases...lol

God do I wish I had a space to powerwash in the winter. Theres only one U do wash nearby and it sucks. Pressure is garbage.

Oh and I meant to PM you on that last order...on those airbox clips I dug up 3 but one was cracked. If you need one more for anything let me know and Ill get my bro to send you one.

We bought that powerwash for $100 off a buddy 4-5 years ago. It has paid for itself time after time. It makes life so easy when it comes to cleaning hulls with that. That guy has bought 2 sets of 787 cases off us and traded that hood.

As for that clip I will need another one but I am sure I will need some more stuff on these next 2 builds. We are doing this 98xp and a 98 gsx. I also am going to be sending you 2 mpems that need keys programmed too.

Hood Removal

If it helps anybody I just removed the hood on my 2001 XP and think I could save a few steps as I did not remove the controls.
Like you I disconnected the choke and throttle cables at the carbs.
Used a tiedown to suspend the hood from the rafters around the bars.
Disconnected the wire harness inside the hull.
Removed the plastic hood cover with the 8 Allan head bolts.
Disconnected the support rod at the hood side.
Pulled the choke and throttle cables through the hole in the hull.
Disconnected the steering cable from the bracket on the hood.
Remove the hinge bolts from the hull side and remove entire hood an bars.
This was a manageable one person job.

Keep the rebuild updates coming.

The motor is going togethor nicely, did not quite finish. Ran out of time putting the green one back togethor.

The cases getting sealant and the crank and counter balancer aligned.

Everything was torqued to spec, new gaskets, seals, everything greases and locktited. The studs were also put in. The head was just placed on as it was time to clean up.

How the heck do you get the case sealant on so even? Do you use a roller like the manual says? Nice job.

You really just need a very small amount. It seems like, well even on the first motors I assembled, that I put way too much on. Then I saw how little racer and jsg use and it comes out much better
