Hey folks. I am brand new to this sort of PWC. I was driving down the road last week and saw the attached SeaDoo for sale for $175 (with trailer). Seemed fair enough since I can get that out of the trailer if this ends up being a lost cause.

I am not new to getting my hands dirty. Just restored a 66 Mustang and do boat work as well. The fella I bought it from handed me a folder of receipts, etc and on the cover someone wrote 1990 SeaDoo SP 580 (587). Inside is a bunch of printed out schematics from 2006.

Bought a battery, charged it and popped it in. It turns over. There is a start/stop button near the left handle - didn't push that one. There is also a button that is located on the "dash" under the handlebars. That one turned it over. Pulled both plugs, checked for fire and there is none. I noticed the flame arrestor cover is missing but the metal mesh breather looking cover is there on the carb. There is a (guess it's a fuel pump) mounted on the inside that is not hooked up. The rubber connector to the air box is missing. I am guessing the carb is not stock and has its own pump because there are black hoses leading to it.

I have the lanyard and kill switch in a plastic bag. There's a hole on the yellow plastic handlebar cover that looks about the same size so I am guess either it mounts in there or that cover is from a different SeaDoo and the kill switch actually mounts below.

There's a choke that pulls straight up below as well next to the start button that works. The choke higher up that pulls out towards the driver does not. The throttle works.

I think I may have a Frankenstein'd SeaDoo? Will post more pics and maybe a video after work today.

Thanks for reading...I am glad to be here and hope to get this thing going with some assistance.

Mark

Welcome to the forums, I'm a car nut as well with 99' cobra terminator swapped. Get some more pix up when you can of the possible add on additions, choke, fuel pump etc.

Rob

Video was good idea, the steering cowling is from later model xp or XPL ski I believe, looks like the choke was also borrowed from the ski that supplied the yellow cowling. Those holes in cowling are where's it's former ski had the choke and DESS security key lanyard connection.

Do you have compression gauge?

Rob

Also I reckon I need to wire up the DESS to get fire? Keep in mind there may be way more issues (solenoid, wiring, magneto, etc.)

Welcome aboard. Looks like that unit is sharing parts from among the years.

No DESS needs to be hooked up. That spring plunger is where a safety lanyard connects and then to you so if you fall off it kills the engine. Once that is connected you can use the start/stop on the bars to start and stop the engine. The Gray box will flip so the black foam tape is against the top of the battery and then each side of the box will go onto the stud and a nut will camp the box down. There should be a rubber insulator so the battery isn't against the fiberglass. That round thing on the black bracket is the fuel pump, or old fuel pump. Someone swapped a later carb on it that has a fuel pump integrated into it. SO they used the later choke cable instead of the old cable. That line with the cap on it looks to be an oil line that should go to the oil pump or the rotary valve shaft cavity. Shes definitely a Frankenstein, you're going to become very acquainted with seadoos with this one. We'll do our best to get you running.

No DESS on this ole beast but there is a cap on lanyard as he mentioned that goes over switch.

It wouldn't hurt to bring a spark plug along but you will find it matches standard automotive thread.

Rob

No but I will grab one tomorrow. Do I need to take a plug with me to match the size?

I moved your original thread to the 2-stroke PWC section, per your request, I will delete the other thread.

Lou

Thank you all. Which spring plunger racerxxx? The vertical or horizontal one? The vertical one seems like a hacked choke, runs to the carb.

Whoa, is the small one to the left of the choke cable that pulls upward the actual start button? I didn't catch that before, so that starts the engine? If so then there is no safety if you fall off and that thing will just run away from you, very dangerous.

The drain plug is inside to the left of the pump. You'll need one if you don't have one. It's an expansion plug. Available at Walmart or your local boat joint.

Yep that one turns it over. I have a kill switch and lanyard just have to wire it up. There is a black button on a cable coming out of the battery box too sort of shaped like an oval but flat on one end.

What have I gotten myself into haha. I am on a mission regardless. I am sort of a magnet for misfit things like this that everyone passes up. I guess I just take a good bit of pride in resurrecting things that have been treated wrong.

Well that is a great attitude to have for sure!

Yep, patience is required with these old skis, but the reward of buzzing around lake after repairing yourself is definelty worth it :driving::driving:

Which switch for the lanyard? The button I push in the beginning turns it over so if i stick a lanyard on it it will try to start. I think the lanyard kill switch is missing period. I have one.

No DESS on this ole beast but there is a cap on lanyard as he mentioned that goes over switch.

It "should" have a safety switch which the tether would hold down, then you can push the start button in and crank the ski.

Keep the 2 strokes alive!

Another question...I want to try some starting fluid or carb cleaner to see if it fires. Where does that go? Seems logical in the carb...but there is a wire mesh screen on top. Just spray some into the center of that or under the plugs?

You can just pour it through the screen(kinda messy) or remove the mesh screen and put alittle premix down the carb throat

Awesome!! If you put a tether on that button that is on the dash to keep it held down and then hit the start button it sounds like the ski will keep running. It looks like you might have scored here and you will have a fun ski with a little work!

If I hold that button down on the dash it keeps turning over just like if you hold your car key in the start position.

The other one I hold down enables it to fire just like a lanyard kill switch...which tells me it probably used to run up to the left handlebar Start/Stop button. So...I need to wire in a lanyard kill switch which I have in a plastic bag along with the lanyard.

As long as I hold down that other button it runs (I even revved it up) but only long enough to burn out the pre mix that I pour in the carb. I added some pre mix to the tank but I don't think it's flowing to the carb. I saw an in-line filter so I am going to replace that after work and continue checking the fuel path. The carb may need attention as well and I imagine there is junk at the bottom of the tank that needs cleaning out.

Is there anywhere I need to add straight oil separately? I can't imagine the oil in the gas lubes up this whole thing.

Edit: I see what you are saying but all the lanyards I have seen don't look like they would fit on that button I am holding down?

Edit #2: I forgot to mention the fuel selector switch will NOT turn. I've tried hard enough to realize it's stuck good. I'll address that after work as well.

Finally saw the video.

On these older models if I remember correctly everything was on the dash and not the bars.

The start button was on the dash and the lanyard kill switch was on the dash. They were separate and if I remember correctly the start button only started it and the lanyard stopped it.

You should have an oil tank on top of the gas tank that supplies oil to the rotary valve gear and the oil injection pump.

The fact that they added the newer bar pad and redundant start stop switch has caused the confusion on the electronics.

Lou? Who is the member in San Diego that knows a lot about the older models? SaltyDog?
