Large leak coming from drive shaft

All, I took the pump off to replace the reverse lock nut and put it all back together. The issue I’m having is that when I put the pump back on and begin to tighten the nuts back onto the studs on the hull, as the pump starts to adjoin the drive shaft, it pushes the driveshaft toward the engine and causes a separation between the carbon seal and the metal driveshaft ring or seal (not sure of the actual name.) and when I put it in the water, an enormous amount of water was coming through the gap. here’s a pic of what I mean.

Are the rubber bumpers on the drive shaft in the correct position?
no old bumpers or debris in the prop
also your 98 GTX has some washers with a square on the back side that must be in the correct position and facing the right direction

Sorry confused about what you mean. Only rubber seal part I could locate on that end of the shaft was the impeller boot. Also where would those washers be?

Parts diagram, rubber bumpers are number 13. The rubber bumpers go in the driveshaft. There is probably an old rubber bumper at the bottom of your impeller that is pushing the driveshaft forward.
The washers with the squares go on the studs that mount the pump before the pump goes on

Yep it has washers but no squares just washers with lug nuts. There is a piece of old rubber down inside the impeller I’m going to try that.

Washers with square dents that set on the mounting studs before the pump goes on?
part number 211200063
Number 69 on the exploded view of the pump

98s have some weird stuff exclusive to 98s
The pump washers that I’m talking about, single coil, ignition, one off mag cup (for single coil ignition) impeller shaft is one off also.

Turned out to be the small bumper that was at the bottom of the impeller. I took that out and it slid on absolutely fine and didn’t move at all. I’m back on the water thank you for all the help
