$400 bought me a very neglected 95xp with the 787 and a little trailer. Motor is locked up, but MPEM is still alive. Interior looks like it's been untampered with, so no rig jobs. Still has a full tank of gas from last year when it died. Causes are yet unknown. Pictures coming soon. Plan on making it look like the 99 spx :) Anyone run a 17/23 prop in their XP? This one comes with several spares, the 17/23 being one... sounds like too high a pitch for that motor.

FYI, there's an atricle in PWC Today Magazine, about restoring a 96XP on a budget, you might wan't to take a look at it. I have a 96XP that is mechanically sound but needs cosmetic restoration. I'd like to keep it close to stock except for the gawdy graphics.

Funny thing is, I think I have that exact issue of that magazine :) I briefly glanced over it, but have an idea already of what I'm going to do. Want to paint the bottom black, remove all stickers, buff the yellow and clear coat the whole thing. Get an SPX hood, paint black/yellow and get a black handlebar cover w/ chrome seat upholstry. It is going to look like the 99SPX, while my 97SPX with the pink'purple graphics will be the gf ski :) I'm going for the "His and Hers SeaDoos" :hurray:

if the stock stickers are in good shape they start to grow on you after while, mine have and apart from getting a whole new graphics kit from jetski detailing, i'm keeping my hot pink stickers because no matter the color it takes a sat of cahonea's to ride an x4 lol. and the girls watching from shore love them too lol.

I haven't decided, I did keep the pink flames on the GTI. The whole thing is just too yellow, maybe black graphics. I'm not goin to do it till winter, so I have time to decide. One thought, paint the hull off white to match the GTI, or maybe paint the hull black. The hull is pretty beat up and could use paint or new gelkote.

The GTI has pretty much stock graphics, only changed the ones on the rear, so I thought I might go a little crazy on this.

it would be nice if the hull was completely black, instead of yellow and had the same pink graphics. it would turn heads for sure.

Personally, its not because i own a 98 spx, but i think out of all the years this one had the best graphic/hull color scheme and design. i do however wish the hull was black instead of white.

it really does grow on you. and it's intended to be "eye grabing" so people notice you showing them up lol

Totally agree...I'd love to own a cherry 95 XP 800. Theres been a few in WI this year I wish I had the funds for.

I agree and the 98s are almost as rare as the 95s. Must have had a lot of 97 carry overs.

TO THE OP>>

Hey check the engine plate to see if it says 787, or 787X... The 787x motor has different parts that are impossible to get anymore. You want a 787 not the "X" motor.

Yea you can find them at a deal when funds are low. Dude has a 95xp 800 here for 500.00 need rebuild but looks like new.

Pics for the 95XP project

I've started ripping it apart, you can tell by the engine pic that something happened to the RAVES... uh oh

Discovering the problem

I started ripping apart the motor, and the MAG RAVE was in piecese. RAVE plungers were totally melted with lots of black gook everywhere. View attachment 8870View attachment 8874View attachment 8871View attachment 8872View attachment 8873View attachment 8869

You can see the broken RAVE pieced back together. Both valves broke, but this one broke under the stop and got chewed. The piston smashed into it and broke. I had to use a brass hammer with some hose wrapped over it to pound the piston out of the jug. The broken crippled piston broke the sleeve in the jug, so now I have an anchor. I used my shop vac and a long-nose funnel to suck the white residue that came off the bolt threads before it made its way into the crank case. Easy to use method, the suction keeps the funnel on the tip of the shopvac hose :)

Got used jugs, they seem to be bored .25 over. Pistons on the way. Painted the replacement parts already, looking to take this thing to the OBX soon :)

how can u tell if the mpem is good i still havent been able to get the 96 xp i found to start it does nothing when i put the key on other then flash the lcd and the red leds light up engine doeasnt do anything when i hit start button.i was worried it has a bad mpem, sorry to change the subject or jack ur thread

Not a problem at all. It is possible your beeper is dead. There is a diagnostic you can run by pressing the start button 5 (or 6) times in a row. If all's good, it'll make two beeps (without the lanyard, it might work with it on too, not sure). I've never really had any other output than that, but some others on this forum might know more about the diagnostic feature of the MPEM. When you hit the start button, check the voltage at the solenoid. Does your VTS work when you plug press the buttons? Your DESS could be messed up, in which case, the diagnostic should check out fine (I think the signal for that is a long and short beep, but again, it's been a while since I've done this). For me, the diagnostic is just a way to know that the computer is not dead. I really should have tested the ski for spark first...

I tried the diagnostic mode but got no beeps guess the buzzer is bad. Would any speaker work just to test for a beep?or does it have to be a buzzer ?I just wanna test it. I didn't check the vts but I will thx for ur help

You know, I'm not sure if any ol' speaker would work, but try it out and let me know if it does. I'm curious myself. I bet it would, I think all that buzzer is is just a waterproof speaker.

I have a tweeter I pulled from my truck I'll try out. As for the waterproof if I left it in there I'd put it in a cpl of ziplock bags and seal it good but buzzers are cheap so no biggie.I still have to go get the ski I found it for 500 but I got them down to 425 might work on them some more and get it even cheaper. I just wanna make sure it's fixable and not another money pit

IMO, they're all money pits, but let's face it, the old ones are WAY better and more fun than the new ones, and at a small fraction of the cost. To buy a new one, you'd be making payments even when it's stored up for the winter. I also think that working on them teaches you a lot about the way your craft operates, and would be helpful if you're broken down somewhere.

As for trying to work people down, have the amount you want it for in your pocket, or know of other options of where to buy. You're the buyer, you have the money, just don't piss off the seller ;)

Yea I feel on the learning part just wish I had a fellow member close by for the hard stuff so I could learn off of them. The seller has been pretty cool bout it so far she let's me come by when I find somethin new I can try out to get it started. To her it's no big deal she's like I'm 55 years old I have no business on that thing. It has a little issue on the title seems the previous owner signed the title but nvr transferred it. There's a work around but I have to do the leg work

hey bro i brought the ski home today and messed around with it,the speaker thing didnt work guess it has to be a buzzer but i did get the thing to finally turn over.turns out it had a bad starter,start/stop button and the buzzer is bad.swiped it all off my gsx just to test it.now i got a beep and itll turn over off the start button. now i gotta get it to fire up but its late and i dnt wanna bother the neighbors.it started for a few secs and would die out but thats when i was jumpin the noid well see what it does now

Finally got the pistons, rings, and new top bearings in (gaskets already here). Went to put them in and realized that the crank turns over a bit funny... like there is a flat spot in the bearing rotation. After a breaking 3 bolts trying to get the RV out, I decided it probably wasn't the brass gear and just pulled the whole motor. Using a spare crank case/crank that I had from last failed engine purpose (had an out of spec cylinder). This engine seems to have a new crank, as the wrist pins are drilled for more oil to the bearings. This motor has been dropped or something, as the starter has to be "pulled" in with the screws. The housing is a little egged. When the starter engages, it makes a little "ding" as the drive hits the flywheel a little. The motor turns over just fine, I hope this won't cause any problems. Put the pistons in, got 150 psi on both cyls, I think this motor is going to run GREAT! Going to clean out the hull today and reassemble, maybe even start the break-in. :D Wish me luck guys!

Can u post pics on the piston and cylinder job I just picked a 96 xp and it's reading 125 in each cylinder so I'd like to use your build as my reference when it comes time to do mine

yea, 125 is rather low. you may get away with just getting new pistons/rings, but it depends on how much wear you have no your cylinder walls. what pics exactly are you looking for? I have the motor all put together now, but have another 787 that I'm getting ready to reassemble for my SPX.

PM me closer to the point of when you're going to do this, and I'll make you a write-up. I don't think I'll put in a detailed step-by-step here
