I recently aquired a 95' SPI from my uncle, which needs a new starter motor. A local marine parts supply suggested buying "a POS replica starter off ebay," rather than spending $350 on a new Sea Doo starter, or a used 587 starter. Has anyone ever purchased one of these? If so, did it last for more than one season? The prices on these "New OEM replacement starter" motors range from $150-$240. There are also used 587 starters on ebay for sale as well, with no warranty. Not sure how comfortable I am with that either.

I'm new to this sport and was hoping you guys could give me some reliable feedback. Thanks!

stay away from those, "replacement" starters. Just threw one in the street for customer. and installed his old one, in 00 GTX.

Take your apart, and/or take to alternator/starter shop...if anything.

Ebay starter

Well thanks for that post I was just going to do the "buy it now" thing to try and save a few bucks.
Cheers

There is a thread on here, started a couple weeks back with lots of good information about why to stay AWAY from those ebay starters.

SBT sells decent rebuilds for around $100. That is about as cheap as I would go. Otherwise go with a new one or find someone to rebuild the one you have.

I've had the best luck with the local alternator/ starter redo mine...cost about $75.00 and lasts for couple years of Florida use.

Rip off at EBAY!...

I have been working with a member, in our forum, who was ripped off for several hundred bucks over a pair of Carbs..........from ebay. So, be careful. It's not ebay's fault. They can't control every scammer that comes in trying to seel stuff.

I agree with Scooper. The 587cc starter from SBT runs around $99 bucks. Even the 4-TEC starter is less that $150...........so, buy from a reliable source, who also offers a guarantee.
