Aftermarket flame arrestors?

I would love to get rid of the stock air box on my 97 SPX. It's big and bulky and always in the way for things like carb adjustments.

What is the performance benefit to getting smaller, aftermarket flame arrestors? Is there any accompanying mods that would have to be done as well?

There is no benefit to removing the stock air cleaner even on a slightly modded ski. They flow plenty of air and do a great job of keeping water out of the engine. You DO NOT want water in the engine. You will see no performance gain and will have to re-jet the carbs. If you do go AM on the flame arrestors make sure you have a carb brace or you will break the intake manifold.

So looks like dealing with the bulky air box is my best option lol!

I'm good with performance of my SPX even though it's stock. I was really just wanting to get that thing out of the way. Seems the risks of not having it on there are more than it's worth. I have gotten really good at taking it and the carbs on and off as of late.

why are you having to mess with your carbs so much? I'm suspecting an underlying issue that's not the carb adjustment...

Mine have been set at factory spec for years and I never have to change them...

I'm with Sqrl on this one, a couple of years ago I started screwing around with the carb. settings, after a couple of weeks guess where I wound up, back at the original carb. settings.

I replaced my stock AB with Proks strictly for aesthetics and for convenience of accessing the carbs during initial tuning, but honestly after that I never touched the carbs.

I think it looks better, a LOT better, but performance wise... nothing that I noticed, basically I spent about $80 just because I liked the look it gave. Outerwears solves water injection concerns.

here's my buddies, with the outerwears off...

I was having bogging and dying from idle to throttle issues. I also pulled them to do a pop off and pressure test. One of them has a slight leak during the pressure test and wouldn't hold the 10 psi for the full 30 seconds. I do plan on rebuilding both carbs this winter.

Hey Spim you and your buddy should really get some carb braces on those engines. THe manifold itself can not support the weight of the carbs and will break at some point.
