'97 GTX - MPEM, How do I know its dead?

Hi, new to the site, looks like there is absolutely fantastic info on here about ALOT of machines.

There is lot's of info about changing mpem's and the model you need BUT, I am trying to find out IF mine is "toast"
I have no blown fuses in my rear box and have checked for 12v everywhere I can with my voltmeter.

I plug in my key and get like a very very quiet tick.tick.tick.tick in the front. Then it stops, it will repeat if I unplug and re-plug the tether in.

It cannot be just the "beeper" because the start/stop button does nothing.
Does this mean my MPEM is done for?

Sounds like your buzzer is dead, and it's trying to make 4 beeps. If that's the case... then the MPEM isn't talking to the CDI.

So I should be messing the the front connection to the front computer (MPEM)? May/could be more of a connection issue than a blown mpem?

As I am trolling around in the forums, I see why I may have a hesitation/bogging issue over the past few years also. The GREY fuel lines!!!! It always ran well when RPM's got up, but really hesitated while speeding up bad, almost felt like 1 carb was kicking in and then BAM the other kicked in and you felt the power.

Still messing all I can with the connections. Have 12v on every fuse, and both fuses on the MPEM are good. Still just getting a faint tick,tick,tick,tick from the beeper. BTW the screwdriver tap didn't get it to beep for me ;(

No dash lights or LCD coming up at all. Tried to make sure ALL connections under the dash are good after I took off the inside hood cover.

With no gauges or lights coming on you may a bad ground at the starter and/or a bad post...exactly my problems and solution.

I have gone across the solenoid in the back power box and turned the starter over, is that an indication that I have good connections at starter and shouldn't be a corrosion (ground) issue?

Starting (no pun intended) to run out of options I think. Like I said, I have over 12v everywhere. just the baby ticks at the beeper. and same tick, tick when I press the start button, but still nothing on screen.

are there fuses in your mpem ??? mine has fuses under cover on mpem

Yes, fuses in the mpem- a 5 and a 15 I believe. Both good. I have 12v on each of them. I had tightened the ground a turn or two on the connections in the mpem box hoping that they were a hair loose, but didn't get me anywhere.

The one thing is on this machine - All of the connections are unbelievabley clean and free of any wear or corrosion. they basically look brand new - Even in the back power box - I don't think any moisture has ever been in it.

Here is the power connection? in the front compartment. I can see some brown - smoked connections type of marks in this green epoxy connection. Maybe it's this box - not the mpem board. Or I have to buy an entire box instead of just the mpem board.

I am assuming now that is the rectifier. A smoked rectifier looks plenty cheaper than an mpem. but troubleshooting not complete yet.

Thats not it.

The 97 Has the CDI built into the MPEM and so it makes it a costly MPEM. Not easy to find.

Its quite odd that the guages dont come on. Leave the key off and hit the starter button and tell us what happens.

I just put the 12v back into the machine. With NO key in - pressing start does absolutely nothing. With the tether in it faintly ticks for a bit, then pressing start gets you the faint tick also.

I know that I'm late getting on this thread, but I did read the thread start to finish. This might be a shot in the dark, but it won't cost you a thing. Take the battery to an auto parts store and have it load tested. A low battery can the the MPEM do some crazy stuff. Just because it tests 12v. doesn't mean it has the capacity to run your seadoo.

(I'm more of a 951 specialist, I know nothing of the 800 skis)

Battery is new and 99% dont think it's the problem

Did you wire brush the terminals on the battery? Battery posts oxidize and can cause this. I had this happen with a brand new battery. Don't assume because it's new that it's good. You don't know how long it sat on the shelf before you bought it. Wire brush them so there shiney and then give it a try.

I picked up an MPEM for the ski and put it in this week. I got to see the digital screen light up and the motor turn over for the first time in 2 seasons. WHOOOOHOO, he he.

Funny thing on the side though, the beeper always worked, now it actually died, funny how things work.
