1996 GTX

New Member
Hi, I just bought two 1996 GTX Seadoos. I took one of them out on the lak on Sunday and it ran good for about 20-30 minutes. I was able to get it up to full speed. After I felt comfertable on the seadoo I started making a S patern in the water / fish tailing the seadoo at a slow speed. The Seadoo all of sudden felt like a clutch was slipping. The engine was running good and would rev up but the Seadoo would not go over 5mph. Any thoughts? What should I look for? I'm going to go check the wear ring now but that doesnt make sense as I would think the wear ring would gradually wear done not suddenly.

You've got cavitation, it's usually caused by a worn or missing wear ring. I give this advice all the time on how to check it, but honestly I have never had one wear out, mine a usually are just missing.

Anyway to check the wear ring you need to, on your ski remove the reverse gate, the steering nozzle, then look into the pump, check the clearance, between the impeller and the wear ring, it should be no more than .040" about the thickness of a dime. If the area looks white, it's the fiberglass core and the black part of the wear ring is missing. Part no. 8

Anyway it's not a big job to replace it, here's a how-to that Dr Honda wrote on the subject.
