Prepping for new turf. Last time on my 96 I thought I did it a little sloppy on filling the holes so this time I thought about it.... Painters tape and a hole punch! Pure GENIUS!!!!!!!! Now I have minimal sanding and I'm done. Watcha think, other than you think I need mental help.

Well no need to sand, it was so thin I could just shave the extra rings off with a straight blade. So, 15 minutes of tape time saved and hour of sanding and crap looking work.

Here's the turf I'm using. hfgreg at www.pwcmuscle.com was great to work with for the Hydroturf, awesome customer service! When I got it I was surprised the process they use to cut the diamond groove leaves a little tail on EVERY DIAMOND!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, I plucked EVERY ONE with needle nose pliers. I think the one side turned out great so far. I need to retake some of these pics as my phone seems to be taking crappy pics right now.

No contact cement, I bought the psa mats. I don't have time for glue.

No one noticed yet, that my mats do not have the "Hydroturf" logos. That's an upcharge but I think it make the mats clean looking.

I wish mine had the big white 'Hydro Turf' logo instead of the little one. More of a retro look. Your's still look good either way.

WOAH! that matches perfectly!!

Thanks Suke! Yes they do match really good.

I saw them on CReynoldsMIZ--'99 SPX and really liked them, but wanted them logo-less. You can get the big logo that you want, but it's an upcharge I think, hfgreg would know for sure. I'm not opposed to logos but I just wanted it to be really sanitary looking. Ideally I wanted black with light blue to match the XP800 on the rear decals but they only had dark blue I think. Your buddy did the pink and that look really good but I didn't want to match that ski.

I was really ticked off about the ht logo on my 99 spx mats, the logo was a grey and black on the previous set I bought, then the next ones were white and black and did not go with my scheme at all. I called ht directly to see if they could give me the cut outs of the same color. I was told maybe they would get back with me. After the second email I never heard back. They should really let you know what the finished product will look like at the time of purchase.

Since then We have bought our last 3 sets of hydroturf through pwc muscle and have been very happy with the speed and prices.

How do you like the quality of the hydroturf? I know you usually get the black tip.

Just a warning the yellow will fade and fast if left outside, even if covered. It will turn the yellow white. The 96xp I did for my fiance's brother has the black on yellow and his are fading but he leaves them in the back yard with covers on them. We leave ours inside.

You tape each hole and plucked each tail? Dan? Once again quality work! Look's very nice. What material did you use to fill the holes? I pulled the mats off the XP and plan to replace as well.

Yeah, I know I'm sick in the head but I really want to up my game on this resto. I also did't want to have to sand all the stuff out of the footwells. I just ordered more goodies from the dealer and off to ebay for some more!

I filled the holes with Bondo Glass available at Walmart. I'm sure you could use most anything but I would avoid anything with silicone in it, adhesive doesn't like to stick to that. You'll have enough for the entire forum to use. Mix up small batches around a 1/2 dollar size, you won't be able to finish a complete footwell in one shot. I mixed about 3 or 4 batches to do mine the other night. You'll need a bondo spreader too and just work the stuff into the holes.

Thanks for the heads up. I think I'll be ok with the fade as this ski will never be outside or in the water.

I like the hydro a lot. I don't like how the BT has 2 piece foot well for the long strips. I like how I can opt out of logos on the Hydro. Don't like how I had to trim all the tails though, they're still getting stuck on the dogs when they come out to visit me in the shop. If I had to buy another set right now.....it would be hydroturf. If I was selling a ski that needed turf.....it would get BT.

Yeah I love hydroturf. The 2 toned cut groove never had anything hanging off like that. I usually stick with 2 toned. Today we are putting on 3 sets, the 99 spx We bought black on yellow, the 96 gtx just black and We are putting that marble oem seadoo turf I bought a year ago that you found on a 97 xp. I will have lots of pictures going up today lol.

Yeah his pink ones do look really good! I wasn't sold on them until saw them in person. I pondered for a bit about doing something snazzy, but figured I'd blown my budget enough.

Slow update. Just been taking my time with this project. I keep finding stuff so it keeps adding up and I just can't stop.

Scored an NOS in the box VTS gauge

66.jpg

New OEM LH control straight from the dealer. It came with a black VTS button cover but I had already bought an NOS correct purple one.

New style oil pump drive

68.jpg

I figured I might as well just replace the rotary valve, it's getting everything else. Oh I also scored a new OEM rave guillotine to finish up the pair, already had new OEM housings. So the engine will be almost 100% new less the RV shaft and brass gear.

I did the soft scrub on the hood and that brought it back really nice, then tonight I ran out to Bed, Bath and Behind and picked up some Wipe New. That chit is some amazing stuff, made the hood 100 times better and looks like new again. The pics don't do it justice.

It all looks really great. Have you found a rubber boot for the hood? The hood looks brand new by the way. I wonder how long the wipe new will last? Even if it is only a summer who cares if all you have to do is wipe it again. Im shocked you did not sand blast the pto.

Really clean handle bar pad---check. No, I didn't get to the PTO yet. I was trying to pressure test last night and misplaced my RV cover screws, so I have to get M8X20's tomorrow from the shop and once that is done I'll hit the PTO. The wipe new has a 2 year guarantee, LOL. Not sure where I'm going to keep this one once I'm finished with it but it won't sit outside that's for sure. I might just put it on my single place and keep it in my neighbors barn and bring it out when I want to use it. I still have parts on my wish list I want to get, but might have to swap them out later. I have just about everything I need to finish it, I just really want everything just right.

No need to send out the dogs, I can get it new from the dealer. It's just the justification of removing an old perfectly fine part to replace it with a brand new one just because I want it to be new. I'm just being cheap and I don't know why. I've blown money on stupider crap in my life and will continue to do so.

Like you told me a year ago "it's a sickness". The hood came out very nice! Soft scrub and a 3m pad? I may have to go back and hit the hood on the XP project....have a few areas that still show a slight white/faded look.

Ha, it is a sickness and I need to finish this one to cure me for a while.

Looking good there! Im on the hunt for #2 now… maybe a 4-tec this time for the boss lady

Thanks man! 4 strokers are out of my league dollar-wise. I shop sub $500 skis. I don't want a runner and a water test just means the ski is gonna cost more, LOL.

Got some more goodies in today. Finishing off the bars. New OEM throttle housing and thumb lever.

Finished detailing the inside of the hood and changed gauge boots and installed the VTS gauge. The 95 XP800 has is a one year, one ski only VTS wiring harness. The one for the 95 XP 720 is a different part# due to the wiring harness. That is the only difference, the gauges are the same so it's not like it that special but if you need a gauge and wiring harness it's pinned different then the 96+ skis.
