Does anybody know where to get the temp sensors on a yellow 587? They are obsolete in the BRP database and I need two of them for my rebuilds..I have one of the old ones and I see on Overtons website they have a couple that look real close for outboard engines which are to stroke and made out of the sam material. I was thinking that they would work. Does anyone have any better advice?
Thanks

eBay??

The only other thing I can think of is to use one from the newer engines, and adapt it if need be.

If I get time tomorrow... I have a yellow engine, and a 720 sitting in the shop. I'll see if the temp sensors can swap.

Yes... you can make the newer sensor work. All you need to do is change the connector on the wire. The new sensor uses a flat blade style connector, and the old one uses a round, push on.

Thanks,
I just looked at the 93 white 587 and it looks like it is the same one except for the connection which I will have no problem changing out but around $30.00 man that is pretty steep when you figure I need two of them. I have one of the old ones but I was going to put all new in the all new rebuil engines. if you have one let me know. Thanks for responding.

If you look at one of these things, it has a round piece of tube hanging into the head. This is a thermocouple. All it is are two pieces of metal that sit side by side. One will remain straight, the other will bend with temperature change. When it gets really hot, over 200*F, it will bend into the other piece of metal, shorting it out and setting off your alarm.

Rather than spending all the bucks on this replacement part, you can consider a temp gage that can be purchased from any automotive parts distributer.

You might even find the temp sensor in a standard automotive set up. This is the same type sensor used in the "dummy lights" of cars. The ones with actualy gages is different. I know the ones they used in the older model Chevys are quite similar. I'm just not sure about the threaded end. But, here you can get adapters that may allow you to use it.

If you have an existing one, take it to an Automotive parts house and see if they can match you one, or go to a junk yard and look through the cars there to see if one is close to what you have. Most every temp sensor I've ever come across is a one wire sensor. The wire leading is the resistance wire and the treads of the sensor is what grounds that wire when the time comes.

A gage is your best alternative though. Those kits come with several adapters.

Because the temp sensor is on your water outlet side of the engine, you could actually put a "T" in line, just outside the head, then drop a sensor into it if you have a hard time matching the threads of the engine head cover.

thanks Snipe. I was thinking of bringing the old one to an auto parts store. I was also looking at Overtons online catalog and they have them for outboard two stroke outboard engines . I did find ones for a newer model on the SeaDoo parts site. But they want 30 some dollars for them which I think is kind of high. I will come up with something. I was hoping I could get some info from someone that had actually got a "generic" temp sensor but I guess not. Thanks for the reply.

Temp sensors...

In most ways, all these sensors are generic. They are a simple bi-metallic part. Simple mechanics.

I'm at work right now but PM me with your email and when I get home, I'll look through all my parts junk to see if I might have one. As small as they are, I don't think it'd cost a couple bucks to send it. I know I have 3 head covers but not sure if the temp sensor is still in them.

Shoot me a PM, I'll send you my email also. I get home about 6:30 p.m. central time but if I got one, I'll be happy to send it your way......

Needforspeed....

I know you are restoring a couple older skis. can you post a link to the project build?

also... I'm going to restore an 1990 Si. I have it over in the boat section because that's where I spend most of my time.

Hey Honda dude. I don't know how to post a link to the project build, But I have a post on this site about them. I will update a few pictures so maybe the thread will be on the front page.
