Thermocouple...
Thanks,
I just looked at the 93 white 587 and it looks like it is the same one except for the connection which I will have no problem changing out but around $30.00 man that is pretty steep when you figure I need two of them. I have one of the old ones but I was going to put all new in the all new rebuil engines. if you have one let me know. Thanks for responding.
Erik
If you look at one of these things, it has a round piece of tube hanging into the head. This is a thermocouple. All it is are two pieces of metal that sit side by side. One will remain straight, the other will bend with temperature change. When it gets really hot, over 200*F, it will bend into the other piece of metal, shorting it out and setting off your alarm.
Rather than spending all the bucks on this replacement part, you can consider a temp gage that can be purchased from any automotive parts distributer.
You might even find the temp sensor in a standard automotive set up. This is the same type sensor used in the "dummy lights" of cars. The ones with actualy gages is different. I know the ones they used in the older model Chevys are quite similar. I'm just not sure about the threaded end. But, here you can get adapters that may allow you to use it.
If you have an existing one, take it to an Automotive parts house and see if they can match you one, or go to a junk yard and look through the cars there to see if one is close to what you have. Most every temp sensor I've ever come across is a one wire sensor. The wire leading is the resistance wire and the treads of the sensor is what grounds that wire when the time comes.
A gage is your best alternative though. Those kits come with several adapters.
Because the temp sensor is on your water outlet side of the engine, you could actually put a "T" in line, just outside the head, then drop a sensor into it if you have a hard time matching the threads of the engine head cover.
