Why not to buy cheap Ebay starters !!!!!!!!!!

When I restored my old SeaDoos ....(before I found this forum) I thought I would put brand new starters in when the rebuilt engines went back into the hulls. Knowing what a pita it is to have to change one I figured new was better.....Boy was I wrong!!! here are some pictures.....

everything that had to come out to change starter

here we have the armature shaft that just broke.

only two brushes

and busted up magnets.....this starter was on the craft for maybe 6 hours of use....

...nothing but junk do not buy.....

my ebay starter went out on memorial weekend but it didnt look that bad still lookd brand new it just wouldnt do nothin,now idk if it was from user error as someone put my battery cables on backwards either way the seller refunded me in full no questions asked,as for the brushes my oem starters only have 2 aswell

Sorry to see you have to go through that problem... but thanks for posting up the pics. It should help convince the noobs to just rebuild the OEM starter.

I guess if you enjoy skinning you knuckles, cursing, and standing on your head changing starters, then you should buy Ebay starters.

you know....a different one I took apart had 4 so I was thinking it was a cheap ness...But today I took apart a OEM starter and it also only had two brushes.

This is a little off the subject, but I have been ordering parts from authorized BRP Distributors, the parts come in BRP packaging, so I don't think they are counterfiet. But a lot of them are made in China, ie: "O" rings, oil filters, bearing seals. Maybe that's the only source now but still disappointing.

yea, all my oem starters, even for the 787 had two brushes. I put a new bendix on my 20yr old starer and it works like a champ. btw, I didn't have to remove the manifold or exhaust pipe to change the starter (on a 580). It's a bit of a pain, and you have to have a pretty steady arm, but it's possible to remove/install a starter w/ exhaust completely intact. You should use a mirror when done installing b/c there is a threaded hole right beside the starter mounting hole. Sometimes you can start the bolt in that hole (which obviously doesn't hold anything). You can keep your bolts in the socket if you put some plastic over the head, and then put the socket on. The plastic wedged between the bolt head and socket will help keep it on there long enough for you to get it in there. Once you do this once, you can pretty much do it w/ your eyes closed (or w/ the exhaust intact).
