What did I burn and what do I check

I was replacing the starter solenoid on my 02 GTX and I forgot to unhook the battery terminals from the battery. When I unhooked it from the solenoid they battery wires touched and I saw a little smoke come out from down somewhere where the battery was. I threw down the flashlight and pulled the wires apart. They probably were together for about a second or so. I put everything together and noticed that they battery was pretty drained, so I recharged it. After a few hours I came out to try it and nothing. No beeps and no display. When they touched they werent connected to the solenoid, so i'm not sure what to check. i followed the wires and they look like they go to the battery and the starter motor. But how would this not give a display or beep?

Did you test the battery after you charged it?

If you are lucky the battery blew instead of the MPEM.....actually I would check all fuses in all the electrical boxes first.

One of the small red wires at the solenoid feeds some critical parts. Such as the MPEM for example. I'm thinking (and you should be praying), that the fuses blew as the large hot wire that is on one side of the solenoid touched the small ground wire that mounts to the solenoid.

So,, you need to check EVERY fuse...

Okay, I checked the battery and I am getting over 12.47 volts. Checked the starter solenoid and getting same voltage there. Check the fuse where the red wire was that is connected to the solenoid and it is good. At the MPEM, there were two fuses blown (both 7.5). Replaced and still nothing. So where do I go from here?

Let me ping Minnetonka4me, he can tell you how to test the MPEM itself. There is a chance you smoked it.

I doubt you blew it. At the very worst you prob just have a bad fuse. All you did was touch the battery to the starter directly.

Well I rechecked the fuses on the mpem and the 3 amp and both 7.5 amps were blown. I had some 7.5's but need to run down to the store to get a 3 amp. I'm getting 12.82 amps at the battery and the same voltage at the starter solenoid. When I plug in the dess key, no display and motor doesn't turn. I don't hear a click either.

There is a single smaller ground wire that many miss at the battery. This ground is one leg of the electronics. I think there is also a hot wire at the solenoid that feeds the other leg of the electronics.

Duh... I bet you put the hot wires coastie mentioned on the wrong side of the solenoid. The little red wires need to be on the same post as the big wire heading to the battery.

Those blown fuses are for the bilge and vts and have nothing to do with this issue.

No. I didn't put the smaller wire wrong. When I took the battery cables to the solenoid off they touched together

This would have the same effect as shorting across the solenoid which should have done nothing except turn the starter over.

Okay if that's the case. When they touched I didn't hear the starter turn over I saw smoke coming from down near the battery almost underneath it.

Well the starter solenoid was bad and unfortunately when I did unhook it the two cables touched. I really need to get a headlight. That was my problem is I had a flashlight in one hand and I was trying to do it with one hand.

Okay, I changed all the fuses and I checked there are no broken wires and everything has continuity. Is there a way to check the mpem? I had a friend come by (doesn't work on skis) but he looked it over and thinks it may be the mpem. If it is toast, where can I get one?

Bad Dess post or bad fues holder or corroded pins in either the Deutsch connector in the rear elect box of the pin connectors on the MPEM will also cause this issue while driving you completely mad at the same time !
