It's that time of the year when we start seeing a bunch of "Spam" for the holiday season. This is a never ending battle to keep our site free from "junk".

Anyone can take a second or two in helping to report spam or any other post you may think is offensive. While reading the post, if you think it needs a staff member to look at it and either delete or edit, all you need to do is look to the left of the post and under the avatar of the poster, you'll see a set of icons. The icon that's a triangle outlined in red, is the icon used to report posts. You show support in "your" forum by reporting this. No matter how small you think it may be, if you think it isn't right!.....then tell us.

I'd also like to take a minute to thank those that have reported post containing spam.

Nate Surveyor..............!

Bent...........................!

I'd like to thank you two personally for staying on top of this for the forum. As soon as the report is made, it's sent to our emails. Although I'd like to say I'm here 24/7, I'm not. I got 2 children to raise and a job.......but I do get email and will respond to any report, whether it's spam or something major, like vicious or derogatory threads.........

So if you see Nate and Bent in the forum and you need help, give them a shout!........they'll either have the info you need or they'll know how to get in touch with the ones that do.

Thanks again to all those reporting SPAM!.........it is your forum, let's all help in keeping it clean!............

Thanks for the info. I have noticed tons of spam lately...i just didn't know how to report it. I will be all over that now!

Matt

Thanks!.......

Thanks to all. Since posting this thread, several of you have identified "spam" and used the post reporting tool. That is sent directly to our emails and we can act on it a lot faster.

Again, thanks to all our members who like to keep this crapolla out of our forum.

Porn......?

We've never really gotten any porn, but DCKD (forgive me if I got your acronym backwards) has spotted a thread of porn. I don't know why we are seeing a sudden rise in spam, now porn. BUt please, stay on the look out and know that we here at the forum appreciate all the help we get in providing you, the member with the best services we possibly can and to keep our forum a friendly and clean site!..............

Viruses.........

I picked up a "spammer" this morning that had a hyper link that said it had pictures of our staff members. They use the word "secret" in front of our internet address. Do not click on this link if you happen to see it. It is a link set up to attack your computer, either by a virus or trojan.

Please, continue to report anything suspicious.

It's hard being #1 guys! Looks like we were targeted because of our number of members. We've implemented some filters to help prevent some of the spam, but if you see the posts, please continue reporting them. It helps a lot!

Thanks,
Joe Z

Mr Snipe,

I have been reporting the more obscure spam, that may not look like spam from the thread title. However, the more obvious stuff, I have not been reporting. It seems redundant.... however is that true?

Just curious. Should we report it ANY time we see it, or just the more hidden stuff?

(I asked this on the forum, because I thought we all would want to know)

Spam....

No Nate, only if it's something you see that you think we may have missed. Since we have been bombarded with the porn, pharm and sales spam, staff has been coming in several times a day just to delete and ban it. You are right, it's gotten to a point that it's easy to identify.

The designers of the V bulletin in which we base the forum on is trying to implement a new blocker for us but it's going to be a trial and error kinda thing till it gets right.

Thanks for all your help, it is greatly appreciated. For those that have also been reporting the stuff, thanks.

One more word of advice. If you see something in the forum like porn, I know it may be tempting but in researching this stuff, trying to lock onto the IP address, I found out it was a malicious code virus. So, be careful of this stuff.......it's the easiest way to infect your computer...........

From: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/11/12/AR2008111200658.html

A few excerpts from the article:
Host of Internet Spam Groups Is Cut Off
Spam Drops After Internet Providers Disconnect a California Hosting Firm

"Immediately after McColo was unplugged, security companies charted a precipitous drop in spam volumes worldwide. E-mail security firm IronPort said spam levels fell by roughly 66 percent as of Tuesday evening."
"Researchers have found that on any given day, about half of all spam sent through the top botnets are ads for male enhancement products and other knockoff designer drugs, with a fair number of the online pharmacy sites linked in spam messages that were hosted at McColo."

This is good news!

The battle continues on spammers. I find that we are still getting a large% of all new members are here just to post spam...As a community we can defeat the spammers and keep our area clean for all to view.

Sign up........

Because of the frequency and gained experience in knowing what to look for, we have been catching it before they spam the public forum. They are caught mostly during sign up.

But, don't let down your guard. You see them, send it to us. I found one yesterday that used Geocites as his home page, who he was spamming for. I try to investigate to see what the threat is so others aren't infecting their computer with a malicious threat. This one was sending out a malicious Adware thread, that puts your computer in an constant loop if you try to click out of their ad............

So, don't click on any of this spam unless your well protected from internet threats...........

These spammers think they are sneaky...but we get them...you now were gonna get them!

I go to the forum couple times a day just to throw out the trash. It still builds up... I thnk we need a bigger garbage can:ack:

Looks like were keeping up on the spammers, if that's possible....they taste like chicken.

If you look to the left, there is an orange triangle. Click this, to report spam. Posting here, to report it is not the best way.

Thanks for reporting it, but I am directing you to a more direct method.

(To make your reporting more effective)

Thanks again.
