I answered an add on Craigs List (Lexington, KY) for 2ea. 2007 RXT SeaDoo's with trailer on Sunday. The add was withdrawn shortly after I sent an EMail. There were pictures and the add also stated they were located at Chimney Rock Marina, a short drive from Lexington.

This is the reply I received today.

Hi I'm Justin,

I want to apologize because I had some problems at my office and I couldn't check my e-mails lately.

The 2007 07 Pair of Sea-Doo Jet Skis RXP With Trailer rxpx is still for sale. I am the original owner of these awesome ski's. Speed Reaches up to 70 MPH. One Jet Ski Has 23 Hours and The Other Ski Has 24 Hours. Trailer Included In Sale, 2, size men's small, BRP sea-doo life jackets, 1, size women's medium, Stearns life jacket, 2, BRP Sea-Doo fitted Ski Covers. Included is The Lifetime Pre-Paid Maintenance Plan For Both Jet Skis Which is Transferable to New, and clean title on my name, the buyer will receive it with all papers and receipts that he needs to register it so if you buy it you don't have to worry about the paperwork. My final price is $2,500 both with trailer. I know it's really cheap but we need cash money to pay the mortgage on my house and during this financial crisis you can't sell anything for its real value, so let me to know if you are still interested.

Thank you.

Has anyone seen this before ? Any comments would be appreciated.

Lou

If it's local... go look at them, and buy them.

Personally, I think it's a scam. I would expect to see that got for $8k to $10k. Also... if the guy was so strapped for cash... why would he not check his email, while selling stuff?

Last thing... I have never seen a "Lifetime Maintenance" policy.

But… if it’s on CL… just do a google search with the same title of the add. If it shows up in more than one place… report it.

I use CL al the time and I am pretty good at spotting scammers.....This one def seems like a scam.... Ask for a phone number, then ask when you can come see them. I'm sure from there you will find out if its a scam. If its to good to be true, it usually is. If you do get to the point of purchasing them I would check the Titles and match them with the i.d. numbers on the Ski's.

I would think that is a scam. Nobody with half a brain would sell them that cheap. Even if he REALLY needed the money and was willing to take a loss, he could easily get $10,000 for the pair. 2500 is ridiculously low.

But on the other hand, some people may be that desperate. What do you have to lose? Check them out and only deal in person after you see them. Dont fall for any scam like it needs to go through ebay or some third party place for the money. If they are legit and he will take a certified check, then you would find the bargain of the year.

Scam

This is a scam, I just received the following reply.

Hi again,
the Jet Ski’s is already at a shipping company. I took the Jet Ski’s to them to be able to ship it to a potential buyer whilst I'm out of town, working on a drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico. My brother in law will use his discount to help me with shipping so I have to pay a small amount for it. He have a business with sewing machines and is using the shipping company from 4 years. The total amount that you will have to pay for it will be $2,500 as this is the price that I expect to sell it. Like I told you in first e-mail the Jet Ski’s is listed on eBay and that lets me use their secured system. I'm very busy with my job and I'm sorry I can't meet you in person. According to eBay you have 5 days from the time you receive the Jet Ski’s to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not.
So if you really want it I will give you directions/link to the auction on eBay motors because this is the only way that I'm going to sell this Jet Ski’s.
Mail me ASAP if you are still very interested in my jet skis because now I have more buyers still interested

yea

it's a scam... if you pay a penny, u will never see it again...

shame you can't get a street address and send the police...

When I become dictator of the US, it will be legal to shoot these people in the knee caps... then maybe they won't try to scam others...

it will also be legal to do 80 on the highway.

Not using turn signals is punishable by water boarding.

but... that's a few years off...

Vote for me! ohh wait, you don't have to vote for a dictator :)

Scam

Thanks guys,

I did reply to the last EMail for the EBay link, so I can report this to EBay.

Lou

It's a shame that people actually think to do something like this. It baffles me.

But, Craigslist is filled with scam posts. I see them daily, and most of them are so ridiculously priced, like this one, that you know instantly. Glad you asked first!

Yeah total scam, I replied to a similiar posting in my local CL thinking it was too good to be true and I got a couple emails very much like yours claiming the same story.

He'll send you a link that when you click on it will look like an eBay website, but if you look at the actual URL there's no eBay.com in it.

After sending me the that link I emailed him back telling him that I had the money in hand but that I needed a REAL ebay link to pay and that what he sent me was a scam link.

Of course I never got a reply from him again.

It's amazing how other people will try to rip someone elses hard earned money off, but it's also amazing that anyone would fall for such a scam. They make it soo obvious that it's a scam you'd have to be pretty gullable to fall for it..

I too have seen a variation on this SeaDoo scam on the Houston CL site (for a 2006 SeaDoo RXP instead, but same price and same MO). CL appears to remove these scams very quickly, but if you do reply to it you get told a nice neat little story about why the scammer needs to sell the SeaDoo so amazingly cheap followed by their "ebay link" to pay for it (because people generally trust Ebay, they assume the link must be real). They always ALWAYS say they have had it crated (or at a shipping company already) and will ship it to you once they have your payment!

I really can't believe anybody with half a brain falls for these sort of scams, but I guess somebody must or else why would the scammer's keep posting them?

Bottom line when it comes to a purchase like this, if you can't verify it is what it's supposed to be IN PERSON then it's a SCAM and you should report it (to the site it's being advertised on... pity you can't get the police to investigate this stuff, but the scammer probably isn't even in the US so there's really not much the police could do even).

The internet is an amazing place, but it's full of predators and scammers looking to take advantage of those people who have more dollars than sense.

CL appears to remove these scams very quickly...

It is up to the users to remove them, not craigslist as the listings are not monitored by anyone. If you suspect that a post is a scam, flag it. After a post receives a certain number of flags (not sure how many), it is automatically removed.

In this case, I'm not so sure about that dj... the scam Seadoo RXP ad I saw in the Houston CL disappeared awefully quickly from the listings. Usually when users Flag ads it takes hours if not days, and then the listing title remains in the listings (though it reads FLAGGED if you click on it) for up to a full day at times! I've never seen the user "Flag" feature work very fast, and I find it hard to believe that THAT many people would instantly recognize an ad such as the one(s) we're talking about as a scam.

I think CL is a little more pro-active in regards to the For Sale listings. But, I'm just guessing based on my observations.... only CL knows for sure.

I think if CL would just add a comments section under each add it would help a bunch. That way people could comment on scams, and also make comments on mis information on the Add.. I just saw one that said 1997 GTI stock with 951 motor, and cruises @ 70 mph.

CL

Craigs list sucks... just plain all crap...sadly I did find my XP on there.

BUT i find fakes / scams daily... A wrangler I wanted in NY... seemed good, $12k for it... I knew it was worth $16... maybe they didnt...

send money via western... to somewhere not in NY... same ad on cars.com had the jeep listed in THREE cities at the same time!

SCAM / Reported... PITA though...

Well, my statements before were based on official statements made by a representative of Craigslist. You can consider it hearsay if you want, but it was an article I read, perhaps a year or so ago, that stated they (Craigslist) did no governing of the posts, but simply relied upon the flagging system they had in place. Craigslist employs only 30 people for their entire organization. They have millions of posts daily. Their only other effort to curb scaming is by informing users, through warning messages, how to protect themselves and examples of scam posts.

And, perhaps you misunderstand the flagging system. Your "flagging" alone is not enough, others must flag as well, and how are you to know how many others have flagged it? When it is gone, the flag count has reached the point at which it will be automatically removed. The user who posted will get an automated email stating their post has been removed by getting too many flags. It could be an hour, it could be several days, or it may never get to the flag count required.

Also, unless it is your first time using Craigslist, how could you not know it is a scam instantly? As soon as I see (2) 2007 RXPs w/trailer $2990...I flag it :)

ALL HAIL SabrToothSqrl !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know you will be real busy doing alot of dictating type stuff but I would really appreciate it it if you could find the time to make these jackasses quit texting while they're in charge of a vehicle rolling across the surface of planet earth.

Thanks in advance

...same ad on cars.com had the jeep listed in THREE cities at the same time!

I have seen lots of ads on craigslist this way too, for sale in multiple cities at the same time...same pics, same ad, different location. Easy to spot.

One thing that is usually a dead give away too with PWCs. Registration stickers in photos not matching where the pwc is being sold.

Also, palm trees in the background of pic for a PWC being sold in Ohio or PA, etc..

BUT, I guess if you are a craigslist scammer, you're obviously not smart enough to support yourself with a legit job, and that shows with their "see-through" attempts at scamming.

I'm with theChad on this one...it's hard to believe (and feel sorry for) people actually fall for these scams.

Scam

This must be a real bargain. I found the same two Doo's advertised on San Francisco Craigs List for $5800.00 for the pair, so $2500.00 is a real bargain.
I guess people in SF have deeper pockets than us country folks in KY. LOL

Vice Dictator

Dictator Sqrl,

I would like to apply for the position of Vice Dictator or maybe Dictator of Vice.

Lou

Sure!

No problem! the position is yours; just carry out the following:

No sending $ or people to other countries unless we need something they have.

Anything built / made outside the US will have a 15% import fee.

Children adopted from outside the US will have a 100% import fee.

Not a penny to any other country until we take care of our own.

We have millions to give other countries, but can't fix problems here? We adopt children from other countries, when I know for a fact we have abused and neglected kids HERE?! we buy shirts that support AIDS in Africa... when we have AIDS HERE.

Let's make America work again by removing the incentives that shipped work, jobs, and products over seas.

National Debt?! Not unless those countries have nukes... if not... fudge 'em! we will not take any new debt, but like millions of home owners who suddenly found they were in homes that are now worth less, we are gonna walk!

Ohh, and causing an accident means you have to pay everyone your stupidity delayed $100 per hour they are late because you just HAD to crash YOUR car and hog ALL the attention...
