So came up to the lake this weekend got on the ski (96 gtx) and started just as it always does real easy idles perfectly but when i crossed the no wake zone and hit the gas to get on plane... it just went to about 3100-3300 rpms and wouldnt go over making like a bogging noise.. i tried pulling the choke like 1/4 of the way out and then the thing runs great again... i think this may be carbs but it could also be gas? (Ive already tried fresh gas with multiple different treatments for ethanol and water) any advice would be great

No i actually threw some carb cleaner in it this morning and it seems to be running good again thanks for the input though

Carb cleaner in it ??? as in the fuel tank???

If that's the case.......

STOP RIDING THE SKI NOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1) The carbs are gummed up, and need cleaned. A lean run WILL kill the engine.

2) Pour in cleaners are solvents, and WILL displace the small amount of oil that is lubing the internals.

That stuff is kind of OK in a 4-stroke... but NEVER use it in a 2-stroke. Being lazy can cost you a $1000 engine !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 2 cents... take it for what it's worth.

That would explain why my engine blew up last month. I had used the stuff below and one week later, my engine was gone. I will never use that stuff again in no circumstance (wonder why I even kept the bottle...).

No obviously i did not put it in the fuel tank i sprayed it into the carb, why is this a bad thing to do on 2 strokes

You just have to be careful spraying any solvent that destroys the oil film that is on key engine components in a two-stroke. Remember...the fuel-oil mix is the ONLY thing that lubricates the engine.

The other thing is...there is no such thing as a "cure-in-a-can" for carburetor problems...not matter WHAT the advertising says. Save your money, never use the stuff except perhaps when you are cleaning a disassembled carb.

ALMOST anything added to 2-stroke fuel is not good for the engine. If it is a cleaner, it will do exactly that. Clean the oil away from the cylinder walls and do more harm than good...

No set time. Has to do with fuel quality, Grey Tempo Lines, extra ect ect.

Just rebuilt the carbs last winter and have been running 93 on it all summer soooo just every 2-3 years? I guess

So i did put carb cleaner in it and it runs great but now that you guys say its that bad for the engine should i stop riding it? Maybe put some fogging oil into the cylinders? Please let me know

If the carb cleaner wasn't put into the fuel tank, then fog it and ride it.. If it was put in the tank, it needs drained as well as all the fuel lines emptied.

May of dodged a bullet there. Carb cleaner will chew up the fragile rubber and plastic parts of carbs.

Pulling the choke is changing the air/fuel mix, by adding more fuel/reducing air. This will correct for a lean condition, but only when the choke is pulled. You need to either do one of two things:

1. Rebuild the carbs, change the fuel selector, change the fuel lines, clean the fuel/water separator... i.e. fix the lean condition.

2. Place $50 in a jar for 20 weeks. This will get you a new engine by mid march, ready for the new season. You still need to fix #1...

Check all your lines for clamp tightness. should not be able to turn any of them. If you have a pop off tester pressure test the fuel system. The service manual has the procedure. The gasket on the water separator goes bad all the time. If you have an inline fuel filter that has some hours on it consider changing it. You didn't take the stock air box off did you? The system is tuned to that air flow.

Prior to storage I mix some STA-BIL in the tank and take it for one last ride. In the spring should I be adding a 1/4 cup of XPS to the fuel tank until the gas with STA-BIL is used up?
