There were a lot of changes, the compression was lowered, the carburetors were mounted differently (intake is different( and the ignition system is different. Also the cooling system flows in reverse, so many drawings won't represent what's in your ski.
Physically, the 98 and later long block carbureted engines will swap fine but the flywheel is different due to the ignition electronics flywheel magnets are cast in differently.
It will be more of a challenge to service than a later ski, parts aren't as prevalent..
You can do a topend without doing the bottom end depending on what happened and how bad it was but that doesn't reset the clock of course, it restores compression. If a piston seized the crankshaft bearings very well may have been dusted with the aluminum debris.
I hear purple and red are chick magnet colors, so you won't have to connect the battery in reverse polarity. (joking)
