Is this worth it?

Also, it is not only going to need a top end. It will need a full rebuild. I have never seen a ski that stopped running that "only needs a top end" not need a crank too.

it's likely worth $800+ in parts but there is a LOT of work involved.

looks pretty dam clean.

If that's the model of ski your interested in,,, and the drive is not too far, i'd go there with a trailer and $500ish in your pocket, give a sob story about how non mechanical you are, and how expensive it was last time you bought a ski that needed engine work and blah blah blah. Then tell him that the chances of you getting it running before the first frost is pretty slim.
Then tell him your wife will kill you for bringing it home, and reluctantly offer $400.

IF the cases aren't shot to hell, @ 400 its a steal, at $800 its a fair price, but who the hell wants to pay a fair price for a broken ski in Michigan, in September ?

I love this site! Feeding my desire for a 3rd Ski. Even a tutorial on tactics to driving off cheap with a new project.
That looks like a nice one too.

300 over the phone/txt doesn't carry as much weight as 3-400 cash in hand, empty trailer attached to truck, and the lovely statement of "this thing will be out of your hair in 5 minutes"

when I was selling my GTX hulls in late August the first buyer showed up in a chevy sedan, no trailer, no cash, then proceeded to low ball me, it was a very short conversation.

nothing wrong with playing micky the dunce. And I stress that cash talks, i've sold a LOT of ski's and I almost never negotiate over the phone.

another classic that I run across all the time is a couple of guys will tag team and low ball with $300 txt offers and then another guy offers $400 which now looks attractive after the two first crap offers. Sellers generally get frustrated quite quickly with CL people, lowballers, no-shows, and tire kickers, after the first couple of clowns annoy them then are very receptive to face to face: cash-in-hand, "I'll drive away with it now" offers.
