Has anyone got any idea how the speedo/sensors work??

I took a look at my 96GTI, it's definitely the older style so I'm not going to bother changing them out.

It looks like I've got three choices:
1. Just forget about it, actually this makes the most sense, speedo's are not very accurate anyway.
2. Get another 3 wire speed sensor (newer type).
3. Get a 2 wire sensor and a 2 wire speedo, I can get rid of the tach. because the info. center has this function.

Nick, can you quote me a price on 2 and 3? PM me.

I have a brand new older style speed sensor that is missing the paddle wheel(I took it off to replace a broken wheel on a newer one) that I would sell for $25 shipped, you can add your paddle wheel from your broken one, it's simple. Buying used speed sensors is really a crap shoot since none of them seem to last very long anyway.

That's a great offer but I think I need the new style. Does the sensor you have, blk, red, and yel./blk. wires?

yes, those are the colors, which is the older style. I think the 96 GTI had the black/orange, blue/purple, and purple/yellow which actually is the older style 3 wire system also with different colors. The newer 3 wire system is really just a 2 wire system because the tan/orange wire is the lake temp wire. The 96 GTI did not have the lake water temp. I'm pretty sure the one I have will work, if it doesn't just send it back and I'll refund all your money and each of us will only be out the $1.85 for shipping each way.

Thanks, I'll give it a try, PM me and I'll send the funds via PayPal, or however you want.

Lou...the sensor I sent you was the older style. If you want to send it back for a refund I have no problem with that.

ski-d00 thanks for clearing that all up. I have asked a few times on other threads and kept getting "they are all the same"

So basically if it had a big gauge/info, it had the newer style sensor, and the 2 wire just had the lake temp deleted? I tried a two wire one and grounded the black wire and it didnt show any speed...prob a bad sensor?

One more question...I have a Vapor gauge that has two wires for input to the speedo. When used on the normal application (quads) it has sensor you ziptie to something, and a magnet that you bolt to the wheel.

Can you see any of the seadoo sensors working in place of the supplied parts? The gauge has a variable number you can mess with to deal with different diameter wheels/rotations...

The big digital info center gauges all use the newer style but there are some big analog gauges that used the old style and I think some small analog gauges that use the new style. It's confusing at best.

Yes, all 2 wires speed sensors are the new style with the lake water temp omitted but they don't even make the 2 wire ones anymore. That part number has been superceded by the 3 wire with the lake temp wire and you just don't hook that wire up.

I would doubt that any seadoo part would interchange with your vapor gauge. The speedo and the sensor have to be designed to work together meaning to read a certain alternating voltage. While in theory they all work the same using the Hall Effect, each design is unique.

All its looking for is that magnet to pass by the sensor...although it sounds like every paddle has a magnet and its really looking for one magnet every revolution.

Hi Nick,

I'll need to keep the one you sent me, because I need the paddlewheel off of it. I'm not worried about returning it, you've been very fair with me, so just forget it. Anyway I'll still need the wiring harness.

Thanks,

Lou

I am going to post what I know for future reference. Thanks again to ski-d00 for the help!

278000276 blk/yel-blk/red-purp Early "non digital" needing 3 wires to work
278000583 blk/blue-purp/purp-yel Later "non digital" needing 3 wires to work

278000970 blk-org/purp-yel 2 wire digital w/ no lake temp wire (97xp) 1 wire and ground to work
278000849 blk-org/purp-yel/tan-org 3 wire digital w lake temp 1 wire and ground to work

And lou...it sure looks like the later model should work now that I know what I'm looking for on the diagrams...

By luck, would anyone have the diode value that is used, I bought a few hall effect sensors a while ago, might as well put them to use. A schematic would help also :)

You can get the schematic by downloading the service manual. You can join as a premium member on this forum and download it here, or you can google it and download it elsewhere. The problem is the schematic doesn't show individual components, so I doubt it will be much help.

Solved

Well after a lot of experimenting, I've finally solved the problem. I used a speedometer from a 96GTX and the schematic for a 97GSX. Anyway it takes the new type speed sensor 278000849, 3 wire sensor, the 2 wire would probably work also but doesn't have the lake temp. function.

You'll either need to make or get a 3 wire harness from the sensor to the gauge. Plug the 3 wire connector to the multipurpose gauge, and run a jumper from the pu-yel wire from the MP gauge to the speedometer. The speedometer I have also has a low oil indicator light, to get it to work run a blue wire from the MP gauge to the new speedometer, I consider this important since the 96GSX doesn't have a dipstick for the oil tank. Also you need to plug the power connector bk-pu into the wire harness, this actually powers both gauges.

So the pu-yel wire is the speed sensor, that all it really takes to make the speedometer work. I'm pretty sure there is no speedo function on the MP gauge, but there is a Tach., so now I have a speedo and a tach, which is what I wanted in the first place. Now I also have lake temp., air temp., compass, these require extra sensors.

Thought this might save someone else some time and trouble if you want to add a speedometer.

Tacomatrx450 07:04 PM 10-11-11 If the big gauge is working , splice that purple yellow to the info gauge purple yellow wire. :)

That's exactly what I did, the speed function still doesn't work on the info. center, but the big gauge does. When I toggle through the info. gauge speed just doesn't come up. I works fine for me, I really don't need two speedometers.

Thanks,

Lou

Idk phone problems.. that's cool u got it to work. The 3 plug speed sensor with the blue wire would give me reading spikes on my 97 xp. I finally was able to get a good deal on a speed sensor with a lake temp option. :)

Does the lake temp. option work if you're in a river or in the ocean? Inquiring minds want to know!!!!:rofl:

Lou

It only reaches the top 4" of water... Way off of the real water temp. But neat. You know they do sell GPS speedo gauges , that require just 12v in and are very accurate..?
