In Texas you must register your trailer  in doing so. to register the trailer. you need a bill of sale and a registration recipt. unfortunetly for me, the previous owner didn't have his registration recipt from 2002. At least I got a roadmaster for $300 in great condition. Now I have to find the vin number, and it's not on the sticker attached to the inside of the rail. anyone know where i might be able to locate it at? wheel well? I checked the tongue but couldn't find anything.

I live in the DFW area and all i did was fill out a title transfer had the previous owner sign it took that and the plates from the trailer to the DMV and they were able to transfer the trailer to my name and gave me new tags.

I declared the trailer value at $100 since i paid taxes on the boat. i think paid $60

Hope this helps

Not all states are that easy. PA is a TOTAL pain in the ass to register an out of state trailer. To push it though as a home made trailer here... you have to either have ALL the legitimate receipts for the parts, and then jump thought the hoops..... OR... you have to find an inspection center that will willing to testify that it's home made, and you pay the taxes there, and then they pass the info to Penn DOT.

I had a trailer come in from Ohio, and I even put it in my name before bringing it to PA (I needed a temp registration for a plate) Then... 4 months after being in PA... it was kicked back, saying the VIN wasn't legitimate. (but it said, Seadoo, and ShoreLander on it) SO... I got very lucky in the fact that I found an inspection center that agreed it wasn't stolen, and was the trailer for my 96 sportster. But... I had to get a weight on the trailer, and they did all the paperwork. (for basically the 3rd time) It was a total pain, and it wouldn't have happened if the inspection center didn't want to help me.

As far as the trailer VIN... they are almost NEVER stamped into them... They are on the original data sticker, and the manufactures origin cert. But the stickers fade... and the cert will be gone after it's sold to the first owner.

Good luck with your adventure.

I had a similar problem in Florida. The 2 PO didn't register the trailer and the state wouldn't accept a bill of sale. They gave me a "perjury statement" to be filled out by the last known owner.....basically saying that he was the rightful owner. I mailed it to him, he filled it out and sent it back and the state took it with no problem, OH, I also had to get it weighed. cost was a whole $1.50 for that.

See this is why I asked because there is the original manufacture sticker on it. However it only states a serial number and gives the trailer type/weight/length etc.etc. I would do it as a home made trailer but I have to get it inspected by a DPS officer (trooper), and he is going to know it's not home made, then i may have to go through the process of having a new VIN assigned to the trailer. I'm trying to take the ski out this weekend. and the previous owner didn't give the liscense plates to me. He took them off when I bought the trailer.

Tim... I got very lucky with the trailer I brought back from Michigan. Knowing the issues I had with the Ohio trailer... before I made the drive up to get the boat... I had the last owner send me the vin, and copies of the registration. Then... I did NOTHING in Michigan. (That was part of the prob in Ohio... I transfered it to me)

Now... the nice thing here was... Michigan has perm trailer plates... and they aren't transferable. So... I kept his plate... and it was valid for me to drive on. (to get it home)

Then... I went to that same inspection station with the goofy "No Title" registration... and they did the paper work. The funny thing is... they can't issue a PA plate until there is a title, but since I had a legal Michigan plate... I used it until the PA plate came.

OK.... this is skating a "Gray" area.

I'm not sure how they do it in TX.... but in PA... a plate is owned by the "Owner". So... if I sell a car, trailer, motorcycle, etc... I keep my plate, and the new owner has one issued, or they put on a plate they already own. (The paperwork still needs done for the transfer of ownership)

Because of that.... when my Ohio trailer was in limbo.... I took a plate off a trailer I legally owned... and put it on the boat trailer to tow it. On one hand... that's completely illegal. BUT... since the plate was of the same weight class... and I owned both trailers.... AND, there is almost NEVER a VIN on the trailer.... even if I got pulled over... there was no proof of wrong dooing.

So... since the last owner kept the plate, I will assume that you keep your issued plates. So... if you (or a family member) has a trailer of similar size/weight... you could probably do that to use the ski this weekend. BUT... since I'm not a lawyer, and I don't know TX laws.... do so at your own risk.

I had two "Home made" trailers and they were very close to each other in regards to weight.

I swapped the plate to and from every time I used one on the road.

For me, I wasn't making money with them or anything like that, so I didn't feel uncomfortable doing so...

I was talking to the previous owner, and he actually went up to the DPS office and registered it as a home-made trailer. I guess his office is more lenient than mine. Mine actually told me I would have to come back on monday for the officer to inspect the trailer. could also possibly be that since he was the owner, they made it easier for him. He had it registered in my name and I have to go pick up the plates and paperwork from him. What a nice guy.

Where i live, everyone registers trailers as home made. When you go to get them inspected, the guy looks at it from about 30 away and just checks that the lights are working. Then you go inside and get the plate lol. All you need is a sworn statement saying it is homemade with the measurements, weight it would carry, then you pay the taxes and then you get it registered. Easy as pie
