Gettin rig ready ... questions on shining up my speedster

Hey All,

I'm starting to get prepared for the spring (chompin at the bit to be honest) I'm going to be ordering my hydro turf kit from PWCMuscle, I'm going to be adding to my hyrdo turf order another piece to cut out the big SEA-DOO logo on my red Engine Hatch so all my turf matches up. I'm wondering if you guys could help me out with product recommendations to remove the previous SEA-DOO logo; as in get all the glue off and also what I could use to bring back the red finish. Ideally I'd like mind to be as shiny as Fosters ... LoL.

Any products you guys have used to bring back the finish in the red hatch? I've gone looking through posts but haven't really found any product recommendations.

Shining up speedster

I used 3M's marine rubbing compound followed up by a good wax. Started with a 98 Red GSXL that was really weathered and oxidized and made it look almost new! I used a buffer where I could, but be prepared for a workout with very satisfying results!

Thanks guys ... I'll for sure try the buff magic, can I use GooGone on the hatch to remove old hyrdoturf letters without ruining it? with buff magic should I tape up the decals?

I would think that Goo B Gone would be fine as long as it doesn't have a grit to it. It might scratch the hatch if it does.

As for the decals, I just went over them. If you do have some peeling graphics I would tape them back for sure though.

I also did not remove or tape my stickers when the GTX was done.

To get the old stuff off, heat it up with a heat gun or hairdryer. Peel it off with a plastic scraper. Then spray the goo gone on and wait 5 minutes. Then the glue will wipe right off.

Wash the whole thing good. I then used 3M marine super duty rubbing compound. Next 3M marine glazing compound then finished with 3M marine wax. Took all day but it looks good. I will probably just buff it out and wax it this year.

I also need to do the same thing for the back hatch lettering.I bought dark grey hydroturf so the black letters dont match. I am really trying to decide whether I should buy a sheet of hydroturf and cut the letters out or have something made in a vinyl decal. What turf did you go with? I am not very artsy or good with cutting stuff out. If yours turn out good, wanna make mine for me? :cheers:

Sounds like a good deal. I have really been wanting to do something to make it match just couldnt decide which route to go. I tried to order a smaller piece from Hydro Turf but they wouldnt do it. So I will buy a whole sheet I guess.

I've got dark grey molded diamond. So I will have to order a sheet anyway. Im more concerned with the arts and crafts part of it..lol

I have to say that I never rec goof off or goo b gone on gel coat nor paint, that glue will come off very easy with a simple auto prep wax and grease remover, a plastic blade scraper will keep your hands clean and final clean with a rag.

You do not have to use a marine compound however you can as well, I use 3m heavy duty rubbing compound or fin ii or fin iii, good stuff.

Then follow with a good marine wax then a good marine hand wax and she will shine very nice, the best way is to use a professional buffer.

Now for very bad oxidation you can do the above however you will notice a difference if you remove a sticker how smooth the gel coat is under the sticker if yours is that bad and you want it very smooth and shiny then the option is first to wet sand the gel coat first, then start compounding.

Goon gone wont hurt it. Its actually non abrasive and non toxic. Its mostly a citrus product. Works like a champ.

I never said it would hurt it, the reason I said I do not recommend using it is because there are products much cheaper, goo gone by the gallon is around $25-$30 where as a gallon of professional prep wax and grease remover is tops $13!

In my line of work I expect quality and to save money at the same time if I can. The one thing nice about goo gone is its more like a gel where as what I use is a liquid, however if used the way I do there is no product loss.

Almost like cleaning stainless steel, you can buy expensive cleaners/protectants or you can save money and use bartenders freind to clean and follow up with spray on stainless cleaner/protectant that you wipe buff dry for a very nice shine that lasts.

I run my own business and these days we are forced to save money where we can, with me I do make sure that quality does not suffer though at all. I have tested just about every chemical on auto paint and marine gel coats as tests.

Just like some people know that rubbing alk removes tree sap but theres many people that do not know about that, for the hard chunks you simply scrape off the top and clean up with the rubbing alk.

I get what you are sayin. Sounds great for a business, but the average Joe doesnt need a gallon. A $5 squirt bottle of goo gone will last 5 years. It took less than a 1/3 of a small bottle for the whole boat.

I use the pro sauce for my 2x's a year wax and i use the stuff called HotSAUCE after each use. I just dry the boat after i use it at the dock spray lightly with hotsauce and you can't even tell my boat has been in the water. I use the stuff on my truck too..

I use the conditioning sauce for my seats. My boat sat all winter in one of my garages here is the pics from last week after i took the boat out and got it all cleaned up

Both..mainley buffer on the bottom, and elbow grease on the hood.

First try on getting the hatch emblem cut out in hydro turf. Still a little rough around edges ... Maybe a couple more tries ...

Looks like a good start. What did you use for the pattern? I was thinking something like a thin board or something hard and like a 1/4 thick. Then hold it down good and use a really sharp exacto type razor. I am excited for the progress.

One morning it was around -8C so I untarped the boat and was able to easily get the old decals off cause they were froze. I placed them on a 3" thick piece of dense foam and cut them out. The exacto knife really does a crappy job tried that first and the edges get really jagged. I found a set of tin snips to work the best . Excellent point on direction of Diamonds!!! Good thing I can get about 9 sets out this sheet !!

Is that dark grey? I am kinda color blind, so it is hard to tell. I thought you had used black. If it is the dark grey, I might just have you make me a set if you have enough. The cut diamond is close enough that it may look ok. I could try it and if I dont like it, then buy the molded diamond and have you make them for me. Thanks for all your work so far. I am not very handy when it comes to this part of stuff. glad you can get it.
