First seadoo, a few small issues

Hey guys, I just picked up my first sea doo yesterday. I had been looking for a 96-97 GTX for a while now. I figured it would make a good first ski for the family. This one is a 96 that is incredibly clean and runs great. It tops out at 52 by the speedo with my fat (260lb) butt on it. The trailer is actually brand new from 1997. It was bought new with it, put in storage and never used.

There are only a few small problems to deal with.

I don't get any beeps when the dess lanyard is put on. Still starts and runs great, so I'm assuming its just the speaker thats bad.

The info center gauge. I can barely tell its working if I hold my hands over to shade it. I already ordered the polarizing film for it.

Fuel light stays on even though its full.

There's some oil in the bottom of the hull. It looks to be new oil since its kind of a seafoam green color mixed with a little water. I noticed the lid on top of the oil tank is very loose and there's some oil on top of the tank. The tank is completely full, so it could have spilled from the lid.

Here's a pic of the new toy. Any pointers on the issues above would be greatly appreciated.

 
The "no fuel" gauge even with a full tank is common - usually the fuel baffle or the float within it is the cause.
 
Hi, and welcome to the Seadoo forum, that's a great looking ski and trailer.

It's almost always the fuel float, be sure to get the newer style molded float. As far as the oil goes, the tank was probably just overfilled, when overfilled it tends to leak where the fill hose connects to the tank. Now for the bad news, it sounds like the P.O. was using the wrong oil, if the oil has a green tint most likely its TW3 rated outboard motor oil. You need to be using a full synthetic API-TC rated oil, I use BRP XPS-2 which has either a gold or red color. If you want something more readily available Quicksilver PWC, full synthetic, API-TC is available at Walmart, it has a purple tint.

When changing oil types you will need to empty the oil tank, change the oil filter and bleed the oil lines, also it probably wouldn't hurt to change the oil injection line. If you need help post back.

I just fixed both of my "no fuel" warnings on my '95 XP. Lift your hood and take out the storage bin. Find the fuel tank with 4 lines running from it. Mark each one of them in a way you will remember with Sharpie or something (high enough where the gas will not eat through it). Take the baffle out, remove the bottom filter gently, (don't break those clips--be gentle!).

Check and see if the float has a magnet still on it. If not, you can snag a few replacement floats if you can't find the magnet from here: http://parts.promarineusa.com/productdetail/M50/1/1/11012

I would hook it up to a multimeter and use a small magnet on-hand before buying a float, just to make sure it hasn't shorted out the fuse, though. There's a thread around going into a bit further detail on how to fix that issue, though.

Another thing.. anyone else, correct me if I'm wrong.. You may want to snatch those grey fuel lines out and replace them before they give you any fuel delivery issues as well!

for the 96 gtx, to remove the fuel baffle you have to go through the glove box. carefully remove the glove box door by fully opening and then pulling out one side hinge and then the other, unscrew the 4 plastic screws around the perimeter of the glove box and pull to remove. even if your F1 fuse is still good in your baffle(which it probably isn't), but you should remove it and soldier over anyway, it's only a matter of time. do a search on here, several good posts on how to fix.

your speed is too low, should be around 58 even with you on it(lol). you should replace fuel lines and clean carbs. check compression as well.
 
Just some FYI,,, The oil tank has a common leaking issue at the lower grommet. look there to see if it is leaking. Also, if it is a "Seamed" or "two-piece" tank the seams leak pretty often as well.

If these are clean, the Lou is likely correct. Just from someone filling it and missing a bit or over filled..
 
Thanks for all the help. I think I will tackle the oil issue first. It's green, so definitely the wrong oil. I picked up a gallon of XPS-2 synthetic and a filter today. I'm going to replace the oil pump to injector lines as well. 3/32" tygon seems to be the consensus from searching. Can the rear line be removed and replaced without removing the carbs?

It looks like I have a few fuel lines to replace also. Everything besides the three in this picture have been replaced. Not sure why they left those. Any trick to getting those clamps off?
 
that oil tank is one piece so probably the grommet on the bottom leaking and as advised, drain that oil lol! flush it and use api-tc oil. while your at it may as well replace the inline oil filter and check the small oil lines pump to rotary cover and replace if not pliable.

Ok, so I have a little update, and a few more questions. I put a new polarized film on the gauge and it works perfectly now. I was hoping for under 100 hours and it has 94 so thats great. I found the source of the oil leak It was the grommet on the bottom of the oil tank. So I pulled the tank, cleaned it out and replaced the grommet and oil filter. I pulled the carbs, and replaced the oil injection hoses with 3/32 tygon.

I filled the injection hoses so it wouldnt take as long to prime.


This is the oil pump alignment. Is that close enough or should I get it perfect?


The grey hose in this picture, should I replace it while I have easy access?
 
A little high for Lexington but the 3 seaters in that shape really hold their value. I must have missed that one. I was working in Goldsboro for a while and had been cruising the Columbia and Raleigh Craigslists pretty regularly. Nice find and hope you have a blast with it.

Thanks! It was actually on the Charlotte Craigslist and was located in cornelius. I picked it up the day after it was posted so it wasn't on there for long. I looked for a couple months in Columbia and never really found anything I liked.
 
The oil pump marks need to be aligned and the way you have it is a little rich.
The gray fuel line in the picture is the return line and needs to be replaced. The only ones that are ok to leave gray are the vent hoses from the tank out the hull.
If you buy some Super lean in the purple bottle from walmart it will have the inside of that thing looking as clean as the outside in about 15 minutes.
 
Thanks everyone. What size fuel line is that grey one? I'd like to pick it up on my way home from work today. All the others have been replaced.

The C is hidding so that is Super Clean and it does a great job on oil and grease.
