Hello all, I recently picked up a 98 gts over the summer for free. The engine, well it was in many pieces in side the hull filled with water for probably about 2 years. So I know I am going to have to get a replacement motor more than likely. The motor is a rotax 717 engine and I didn't know if it was possible or should I say sensible to put a larger motor in the seadoo. I am open to all ideas or suggestions. Will post some pics later. Hope to get it going for this summer.

It will get very expensive to put in a larger engine since you will need all the supporting electronics. Also... the larger Rotax engines have different mounts, so you will need to do some fiberglass work.

Just an FYI... since your engine "Core" is bad... you won't be able to get a swap from a place like SBT. I have a 720 (718) engine for sale. Just look in the for sale section.

Thanks for the response. I know it would probably be costly, but I was just thinking about it. I will probably just go with a 720 engine. Try to find a used or junk one.

Here is a pic of the current state of my engine. ^_^

Here are some pics of the seadoo
It was in a lot worse shape than it is now
the colour of the hull was more like brownish black rather than
white, it took me about two days of scrubbing to clean it up.
It's a work in progress...

pictures aren't the best, took with cell phone

great, whatever malware is....from the pics, that motor looks "rebuildable" Go to "playtime powersports" either website or ebay, and order there crank assy...in the kit, you get everything, but first you'll need to know the size of pistons to have included with kit.

The picture web page contains malware. Do not open pictures.

I clicked on them to check and they seem fine, neither my antivirus or spy-ware programs picked anything up? If anyone else has trouble with them I'll get rid of them.

I went back and checked the picture hosting website again. Apparently the alarm I got was from the popup "What Happens after you Die". So as long as you don't click this popup you should be O.K.

I use Microsoft Forefront Endpoint. This is the program that is picking up the threat.

...

I was about to say, there shouldn't be anything wrong with those pics. Anyways, @seadooya I will check that website out and see what they have.
I have also been thinking about rebuilding the engine, and pricing stuff out.

- about the motor -

Based on the following things broken and inspection, I would diagnose that the engine ran without or low oil (based on the scoring on the piston and cylinder) and It probably overheated... Just a guess...

-Things broken or absent-

Missing a piston, other piston doesn't look so good, cylinder sleeves are pretty rusty, Crank has a bad bearing,
Missing the flywheel, The starter is good along with the Carb, I already to it apart cleaned it and rebuilt it, oil injector seems fine, gonna change the jet pump oil and the wear ring. One of the motor jugs has a small crack, but a friend of mine told me he could weld it if needed. - I think/hope that is all that is wrong with it for now. (man I am going to have a busy spring getting this thing going)

So just have to see what my options are, and cost obviously...

converting it would kill your wallet. i got the same ski, except a year older and the 717 pushes it pretty good. its not a race ski but all around pretty good. and the thing is alomost impossible to flip... and i've tried lol. if i were you (since you got the ski for free) just go and get a new/used motor from some where. save yourself so time and headache. thats just my 2 cents

yeah that is my plan for now, just going to go with a 717 and not kill my wallet or myself :) . I am still trying to decide if I should try and rebuild what I got or get another engine used. (A new motor is a little pricey for me) Just depends on how much it costs. There are some local areas by the lake I go to that may have some stuff used, just have to wait and see what unfolds.
