Drive shaft insertion orientation

I am working on a 1994 SPX the drive shaft was removed by someone else and now I am trying to put it back into the ski. Only I do not which end goes in which direction as it seems to fit either way. Any thoughts anyone?

The longer end goes toward the impeller.
