Hello folks, I am new to the forum so first let me say thanks for a great resource. Now on to my tale of whoa. Put my machine away 2 years ago in a garage and took it out last week. Put in new battery and bought new plugs. when i put the dess key on got nothing. tried the vts and it worked, pushed the start button got one beep and a light next to the coolant symbol and a quick display on the fuel gauge. then the red light stayed on next to fuel symbol ( the machine is low on gas) and thats it. checked all fuses and cleaned key and post same thing. interior of machine looks clean, no sign of mice etc. started fine when last run. what do you think? Thanks, fiddlehead

Dess post is my guess based on reading other posts like this. I'm experiencing the same type of issue but no beeps or lights.

If you press start/stop key 5 times without the lanyard attached do you get any beeps?

Is the power coming on when you put the lanyard on? Or does it power up when you push the start button?

Try doing what hobojoe said. Press the start/stop 5 times without the key on and see what beeps you get. It should give you an indicator of what the problem is.

power comes on when i press the start button not when when i connect the lanyard. Thanks for the help guys i kinda feel like sherlock holmes.

Most likely your lanyard post has gone bad... or you have a broken wire between the post, and the MPEM.

ok, 5 times without the lanayard on , got all 4 lights on dash quickly then coolant light flash and 1 beep on 5th press. vts would work also. checked wiring harness , looks good unplugged, looked good. same results as before with dess unplugged.

Dr. gave me this tip to check the post. Put a meter on it....Ohms, one lead to tip on post and other lead to one of the wires in the connector...should get a reading. then do the same with the ring around the post to the other wire in the connector plug. Don't do the black wire. If no reading then you have a broken wire between the post and the connector plug....then as Dr. said replace the post....a used one might be OK.

Thanks DR. i was looking around last night on web, didn't find the posts very easily. the only one i found was used for $50. Is this my only outlet or is there an after market manufac. or part number i need? Whats the deal with the posts? they just go 'bad' . looks like a pretty simple unit , everything is pretty self contained and sealed.

Seadoobuddy, thanks, what's the 'reading' i'm looking for? Should it be a short (0 ohms) Is there anyway to check the harness that it plugs into?

I think there is a troubleshooting guide for testing the post, it's in the service manual. The posts either work or they don't, maybe Seadoobuddy can fill you in.

If you want a good used post, PM either minnetonka4me or 99spxxx on this forum.

Definitely get ahold of minnetonka4me if you need one. I've bought a few parts from him and have been satisfied.

well....just got the 'new' post, its used, and plugged it in. to my surprise (eternal pessismist) i got '2 beeps'! thanks to all who helped me out. now, to see if it starts. can i just turn it over and see if catches with no damage? or should i get a hose attachment, or is there a way to jury rig some sort of homemade attachment? Thanks again Guys

surprise, surprise, now she turns over but won't catch. I replaced the plugs and put in fresh gas same deal. I do have old fuel lines so i plan on changing them out this weekend and everyone says that the carbs need to be cleaned/rebuilt. that being said are there any tricks to just get it to run for a few seconds? thanks for looking.

no takers ? oh well, guess i'll browse the forum for help. part of me is ready to say goodbye to this machine but i sure can't buy another ski for the $1000 bucks this thing is probably worth. Is it really worth putting more money into a 16 year old machine? Anybody got a kayak for sale!

pour a tiny bit of premixed gas in the plug holes and let her rip if it starts then you know its a fuel delivery problem

Thanks Brock did as you suggested and she fired right up. guess i better get after those fuel lines. think i have a blockage? tough to really test her when its not in the water. I do have a flush hose on order so I can get a better idea when that arrives.

make sure you clean the carbs really good....i just sent mine to DR. honda took a week and was the best $80 i have ever spent

Brock,

Sending them to Dr. Honda-Is that the same as when they say to rebuild the carbs? Or is "cleaning" a diff procedure?

when he gets them he will look them over and only replace what is needed...so in hind site it will cost you about $70 to rebuild the carbs on your own or send them to dr. and he charges $65 labor and only replaces what needs to be done....believe me he knows his stuff he owns A&L motorsports ....you wont be dissappointed pm him and talk to him about it

so you actually 'mailed' them to the DOC?! sweet! Fuel line replacement seems pretty basic but getting at those carbs looks like a b**ch. Any helpful hints for a newbie?

for the lines just do one at a time and you will be fine....for the carbs just take the cover of the air box and remove the 6 alan bolts that holds it on and the whiole asssembly will slide out...then remove the 4 alan bolts that hold the flame arrestor housing on...after that just take the 4 bolts out that hold the carbs on and flip the carbs upside down and remove the throttle cable and the choke cable...it just looks hard ......pretty easy once you get in there....and yes it costs about 10 bucks to ship the carbs and it only took 3 days for me to get them back from when he shipped them out.....that will be your best route.....
