I bought 2 machines and one ran and the other i was told had a bad starter and hasnt ran in a month.. I started to take it apart to replace starter and when i took off throttle body it was full of water so i pulled plugs, water and rust on them.. I took the head off and there is surface rust on cylinder walls so i pulled the motor out. Now what to do?? does anyone have a used motor for it??? can it be rebuild for a decent price and saved?? or buy a Remand and use it as a core?? someone please help this is a huge blow and i just want to figure out what to do to get it back together.

IF that engine has been sitting with water in it than a complete rebuild is in order. Rebuilding that 787 RFI is beyond the typical home mechanic. SBT is the quickest way to get it running again. They can ship a core exchange reman engine tomorrow. Or if you want to save a few hundred SES can rebuild your engine. I just sent my 787 RFI to SES it was about $950 with shipping for a premium rebuild with a 2 year warranty.

don't forget to call the previous owner and thank him for being a prick :)

then let this lesson sink in, if it needs a battery or a starter, its likely locked up, did you even try to turn the PTO or look closely at this ?
hopefully you bought it right.

but past the good healthy lesson, adams is right.

I'm always very skeptical when I hear it's just needs a starter. It's a good excuse for not being able to start the ski. Don't you think if it just needs a starter the previous owner would have fixed it? Also it ran the last time I used it. The two biggest lies when buying a used ski.

Hope you got them cheap. I allways say... if you can't hear it run... it's "Scrap" price.

Since you are in MI... the only way to be on the water again this season, is to get an engine from SBT. Call them, and they will ship you an engine today. If you pull the engine this weekend... you will be ready for when the new one shows. You could be riding next weekend.

Sorry for your findings.

yes, unless it runs, it's rock bottom price.

Sadly this event happens daily on CL to unsuspecting buyers all around the country

hey...i see you are in midland ...im in standish and i go to midland just about every weekend or more so if you need a hand let me know.... and i agree with doc....as you know our days are getting colder and colder so sbt is the best way to go..... can i ask what you paid for these and were these the ones that were on craigslist???

Thanks everyone for the help, not to worried about being back in the water this yr. Just want it fixed and fixed right and ready for spring. Wont b to far over budget even buying a new motor just didn't expect it to b that bad

Ok now can someone help me with what will have to come off my motor if I order a diff one and does it have to come off or on in a certain order or position, like timing ect.. maybe there is a link out there with step by step directions??

It depends on which shop you deal with. If you order from SBT you will have to remove your pto drive coupler and flywheel and reinstall. They provide good tech. support to guide you through. If you send your engine to a reman shop like SES they will take care of the flywheel and pto. The engine will be timed when you receive it back. The SES website has pics and instructions about what needs to be removed prior to shipping. All of the major shops will provide you with any help you need about installation, timing etc.

Ya, and the way I understand it, SBT will let you send your core in after you get the rebuilt one, so you make sure you have everything you need. They will charge you a core deposit, but its refundable.
