Best way to clean a gallon of oil out of hull?

as long as there isn't any fuel in it... a wet/dry shop vac. Or just use a bunch of rags, and throw them away after.

i used cascade dishwashing soap in the bilge and a toilet bowl brush. not the liquid soap, the granulated stuff. came right off. and broke up and clumped up any oil that was in there. smells much better now too.

i'd take to lake, keep drain plug undone, back in water, let hull fill up, then drive back down the street....:reddevil:

I lied...It was about 7 gallons, and about 3/4 of it is water.

I was able to let the bulk of it drain out my drain plugs, and then carefully pour the oil portion off the top where it separated, into my oil recycle bucket.

I still have about 4 gallons of NASTY water, so what should I do with it?

Only thing I can think of is to pour it on a dirt driveway at work.

I sucked the rest out with my wet-or-dry and I think I will just hit what is left at the car wash. It is cleaner in there than in most auto engine bays, at this time. The vacuum sucked out pretty much all traces of water and oil, and there is only a slight sheen left on the fiberglass. Probably not enough on there to even soak a rag if I wiped it down.

Hey,

This thread is old, but for future reference; If you have oil or an oily/mix to get rid of, you can typically take it to a local gas/service station and they will take it and dispose it for you. They usually charge a small fee (~$5), but worth it to be rid of it properly.

most oil change shops will take it. I worked at a Jiffy Lube as a kid and we took it all the time. They actually make money on recycling oil, so they are usually happy to take your old stuff from ya.

In my area gas stations with a service area are non existant.

Most places around here will not take "contaminated" oil. No water, antifreeze, etc is allowed to be mixed in.

So if it is mostly water with some oil floating on top, what do they do with it?

Recycling Centers

I'm in NC, so I'm not sure if you have these in your area or not. Here, we have recycling centers run by the county that take different types of trash/recyclables. I noticed at mine that they have an area for this type of stuff. Just another avenue for you to check out - hope it helps.

Similar to stfoulks above, in Pittsburgh, about twice a year there is a organized disposal center that sets up at a local park where you can drop off all kinds of hazardous liquids (Paints, fuel, oil, etc.). I would check for something similar in your area, as they would be less discriminating with a water oily mix. The one here charges on a per gallon rate.

Another suggestion to try: Perhaps fill the oily/water mix you have into old 1 gallon milk containers. It is my understanding that eventually, all the oil will separate from the water and lay on top. Once this occurs, poke a hole in the bottom of the milk container and let the water flow out, plug the hole when you get to the oil and drain that into a separate container. Eventually, you would be left with almost all oil. Then, you may be able to take it to a oil change center or, if your area has it, an organized recycling event.

Good luck with it.

I basically did what djredman said, I let it sit in a 5 gallon bucket and skimmed the oil off the top.

I still had a little water with a sheen on it. Watered the grass with it :D Seems ok...
