you should flip that thing and paint the bottom black. Threads like this make me seriously look for a 98/99 X4. I miss my 97 SPX, especially how pretty the motor was:
thanks for posting! I've been thinking of painting my exhaust black and think i made the decision.

I've highly considered it zuminazx but wanna keep the factory color scheme of the 97, I'll hold out for a 98spx with the black bottom like my 99s. I got some pretty cool things sketched up on what I wanna do with this one.

That engine compartment looks super sick by the way!!

Spim, pm me the price on those exhaust bushings/spacers.

I started on the fuel system last night and found some pretty nasty stuff to say the least. But it will be completely brand new when it's all said and done. Pics below:

Installed a new fuel float in the fuel baffle while i had it out sense the gauge didnt work and it had the old style black float instead of the new updated white one.

Also all of the check valves will be replaced in the fuel system and the one on top of the oil tank.

Ill replace the grommets on the oil tank just for peace of mind as well.

Great job!! Keep it comin!

I was going to just leave the engine in and clean everything up but it just kept bothering me knowing that under the engine was disgusting, so I decided to pull the motor out today and take her up to the car wash and give the inside a douche with some super clean and scrubber brush. Not 100% perfect but a hell of alot better. My hands were frozen at the car wash after about 30 mins of scrubbing and rinsing lol

Still not done wet sanding to get rid of the yellowish haze where the decals were, I've been busy making progress on other things. I will get the outside squared away soon though.

And the motor:

I can tell from the paint on the bolts and gaskets that the starter and mag housing have never been off. I wanted to atleast take the starter off to see if it was rusty inside. Took it off and was very pleased! She was perfect, no rust on starter or flywheel, so I cleaned up the mating surface and then applied some rtv around it (read this in one of minnetonkas posts) and then bolted the starter back on. No need to fix what isn't broke.

I honestly think this ski has less than 50-60 hours on it. I'm highly considering sending my mpem to Minnetonka to scan it for hours and make me a spare key as well while hes got it.

Wow that is cleaning up real nice, keep up the good work. I love a good resto.

I sent Minne all my mpem's last year and he programmed them all to use the same key. Comes in handy, I don't have to worry about a specific key for a specific ski, just grab a key and go. It actually saves me money on spare keys, I now only need to carry 1 spare for 5 skis instead of a spare for each ski.

Kicker, that is probaly the best idea I've heard of yet, I'm definitely going to consider pulling out the mpems out of my skis! Maybe Tonka will cut me a deal on 4 mpems :)

I charge $20 for the first mpem and key and $10 for each additional mpem and $10 each additional key.

So 4 mpem and 5 supplied keys would be $90+shipping. I also write down hours and Vin numbers, and can verify timing if you supply the number stamped on the cases. If the Vin numbers are stored you can verify hours are true as well as if you have the original motor. Problem is those vins aren't always in there.

Mpems can store up to 8 keys.

kinda dumb question, but an inquiring mind wants to know, is it up to 8 keys at once? if all 8 were lost can you start over? sorry don't know a better way to ask off the cuff lol!

8 keys at once, they can be cleared but I can't pick and choose so when you clear it you have to reprogram any old keys you want to reuse. Whenever I program I clear it and start over so there's as many open spots to add keys to as possible if needed in the future.

If I were smart, I'd yank my MPEM today and whisk it off to Buffalo, er, I meant Minnetonka!

Dealer people don't understand these types of requests and want to charge big bucks to program existing keys. I've always said if you have a Good honest dealer that will program new keys for free and/or not charge a minimum on this procedure, they will be about the same price.... Use them. I am the go to when your nearest dealer wants an arm and a leg or you are an hour away from the nearest dealer.

My dealer was actually reasonable with his price but they would not let me just bring them all my MPEM's, they said that I was required to bring the actual ski to them which meant 3 trips back and forth to the dealer, then wait a couple days and pick them up, which would be another 3 trips. It was much easier to just take them out and ship them to Minne.

Besides, why not give a guy that helps you out on the forum a bit of biz. LOL

enjoying this new project, dam good idea pulling the engine, it still amazes me every time I see how well the inside of the hull cleans up.

I remember talking to my dealer a couple months ago and iirc they quoted me $60 per machine to get programmed key, and as kicker said above they also wanted my machine there..dealer is about 35 mins away so I said forget it and put it on the back burner.

Tim, it's funny you say that because when i picked up the ski I had sent some pictures off to a few friends and I remember one of them saying, "man that thing is rough, your gonna be wasting your time restoring that." That buddy stopped by the other day to see some of the progress on it. He was amazed to say the least lol. It still surpirses me too as to how well the inside of that hull can clean up with just some super clean, pressure washer and a scrubber brush.

Figured I would let you guys in on my plans for the engine compartment and see what your thoughts are. Below are the pieces I had my buddy powder coat, the color is deep red. Head bolts are gloss black in the baggy you see there.
www.prismaticpowders.com/colors/PPS-4491/

That site literally has thousands of color choices with pictures of the actual color on different objects as seen in the link above. Deep red is a transparent color therefor needs a base coat to give it it's final appearance. I chose super chrome as a base coat.

I'm not a 100% sure I'm gonna use that nozzle, I mite have him strip it down and redo it black or silver...

So, with the waterbox and head red (also having him do the engine mount bracket red) I want to do the engine either black or some shade of metallic/carbon/gunmetal grey/dark grey etc..

What do you guys think? I'm thinking that the red wouldn't mix with anyting else too well..

Was considering clear braided, red braided, or black braided water lines.

Wow, your going to town on this one. Black nozzle for sure, I dont like the nozzle to look like a big pimple. Seadoo grey motor with blue and red cooling lines. Just my opinion, but I am more of a conservative, keep it original kinda of guy. Did you do the tuned pipe red as well or just the waterbox?

I like it!

I'm pulling my exhaust manifold and maybe tuned pipe and water box today for paint. I should have done it before fitting the motor. I just got impatient and wanted it in the ski NOW! Lol

Long live the 2 stroke Seadoo!
