I have enough projects, but couldn't pass this bad boy up. Grabbed it for $200 with trailer from my brother in law who had it sitting at his grandmother's for 3 years. Was told the engine was blown but it had a lot of aftermarket parts. I ain't mad about it....

What he didn't tell me was that he completely disassembled the motor and had it in a wheelbarrow in a shed. Also the trailer tires were flat from dry rot and the cheap cover had long since ripped and exposed the Doo to the elements. Hydroturf is still good though, so is the jettrim seat

And so it begins....

it's missing several parts, mostly top end parts. i'm wondering if the sbt engine is worth saving with that rust or should I just grab a 717 from Matt whose got me one for a good price.....tips?

You sure that's an SBT engine? It has the later model mag housing with mounts, not the steel belly pan like it should have. And being a later 720 it would be silver. Pics of the carbs please, I think I see some work done to those too. I love the color combo of your HX but 97 in my opinion had the best graphics of the HX they were purple-ish/dark blue-ish and lime green. And you don't see many either

I just assumed bc of the silver that it was sbt...I haven't looked at the engine for any labeling, it's been soaking in WD

I'll have to dig the carbs out of the container I've set them in to get some pics for you. They have the primer kit instead of the choke, and the k&d arrestors but besides that I didn't notice anything.

I agree on the color scheme, wish it still had the graphics

Shiiiiiiit I can barely put gas in the thing without consulting the forum, much less something that intense

Nah, I love the silver hood. But those were the best looking graphics. I like what was done to yours for sure. I'm liking the small surge of HX's lately!

It looks like the inner venturies are brass, but it could just be reflections from the butterflies.

Lol I'm just teasing you. If you are on a tight budget get one from Matt. SES also has a special on 720 for like 650 including shipping I think. OR buy the new internals and get matt to help you build the one you have

Interesting set up.... he had these exact screws removed on the other carbs pulse line also.... weird

Cool pickup man.

The screws being removed like that are because those 2 screws that hold the throttle cable bracket on MAG carb, and PTO carb holds the bracket for the oil pump cable. He removed them to leave cables and brackets intact as to probably not want to readjust the cables upon re-installation. Although it is good practice to check adjustment once final assembly is done.

Carbs were cleaner than a whistle. Now the waiting game until I can drive back to Florida and actually start working on her.

...... this is gonna be a loooong two week vacation......

Somebody has worked on those carbs, very nice. If you decide to go with sbt or SES I have cheap core parts you need to fill the obligation. Be sure to grease those wheel bearings up for the ride home.

Is that hood yellow underneath paint? I'd like to see the underside.

I'm leaning towards buying that 717 from you and trying to part out this one. I just don't like all that rust on the top end.

Just gotta get some quick funds together, prob sell the 4 wheeler

I don't believe the hood is yellow underneath, I'll go take some quick pics

And of course I stand corrected, you can just barely make out a thin yellow line where the grey stops

So I'm on ebay scrolling around just to get a price estimate on if I were to rebuild the engine myself and I need a little help. Any suggestion on a worthy Top end rebuild kit? Also since the domes are missing from my core I'll need a good point in the right direction on those as well if yall don't mind...obviously Matt if you have all these and are willing to part ways with them I'd prefer you get my hard earned cash over some other guy lol

I'm trying to stay stock just to keep the risks down, motor was already blown once lol

And as stated previously, it's got the flame arrestors and factory pipe that are known to blow an engine or two, so one or the other or both are gonna have to go. I'm shooting for reliability, call me a pansy haha

I've never rebuilt before so if I decide to go that way (if the price is right) I'm actually kind of excited to try....

I have everything. Good used engines, good pistons, cylinders, rebuilt crank(sbt), gasket kits, carbs, all of it many times over. It will be known good stuff for as good of prices you can find. You can come see the stuff when your ready.

You're a boss, per usual... I'm up in SC till Sunday but the following week ill have a few days off if you're not too busy with work or moving to loan me an hour or two of your time.

And of course you already know if you need help with that move I'm right down the road

Prairie 400 4x4 with giant mud tires...i will need to clean the carb and check craigslist for a good price gauge before I sell it

I'm looking forward to seeing you get this back on the water. Matt Braley will have you tearing up the water with some quality parts. This is a great looking ski, a factory pipe, ecwi, f/a, and rejetted carbs really wakes up a 717

AdamA96XP the only mod I was interested in doing on my 95 HX was intake and exhaust, which I already have an AM intake, so was considering a factory pipe. I've heard on MULTIPLE locations, if I want to BURN UP my fresh 717, then go and put that pipe on it.... Is there any truth to the factory pipe toasting the pistons? If so, why?

There's always a risk when running aftermarket pipes. As long as your jetting is correct and you monitor things and dial in your carb adjustments correctly you will be fine. Carb tuning is not for beginners though, you can burn up a piston quick. Matt B can point in the right direction on jetting.

The modded 717 I rode was a complete night and day difference over stock to me. It really woke that already peppy 717 up
