Pump Shaft - Gray Powdery substance - 2013 Seadoo GTI SE 130 has 8 hrs.

I just saw this gray substance on the hull. Should I be worried? It's not grease. Looks like rubber powder.

Thanks much!
Jeff

Have you removed it to see if the powder comes to be after beating on it, idling, or cruising etc. Have you checked around to see anything that contains any of that gray powder?

I'm not too familiar with the newer skis, however........

Sure that dust is rubber and not graphite? I guess some graphite dust is normal, running out of water for more than a few minutes can aggravate carbon seal degradation. I don't think I would be concerned over this unless a water leak or impeller performance issue existed.

I forgot about that! Make sure it isn't running out of water for more than 30 seconds or you will most definitely agitate the carbon seal

So how long is too long? I don't think i've ever run it pass 30 secs. I don't run my ski in salt water so I have no need to run it long to flush. I took the ski out today. Kept checking the boot for any water leakage. Its bone dry. Don't think I flushed it pass 15 secs when I got home. Now i'm confused... how long is too long?

According to my owners manual, says to Run the engine at idle speed for 90 seconds. Not to exceed 2 mins. And I have never run it that far for sure.

There's a carbon seal in there that keep water from leaking into the hull and air from inside the hull from leaking into the jet pump and causing impeller ventilation. You are quite likely to find some amount of graphite dust from that seal in the area, it's normal.

As long as there are no water leaks and the ski doesn't "cavitate" during operation, then the seal is doing it's job.

Eventually the seal will wear out and need to be replaced, many of them can last over a decade or more depending on operating conditions.

I had the same issue with my 2011 gti. Turn out the engine was misalignment. Dealer align and replace the carbon ring, never seen that dust again.

I vote it's an engine misalignment issue too... since it's a new 2013 machine and should be under warranty you aught to take it to a dealership and let them deal with it ASAP.

NO you should NOT be seeing that amount of graphite powder, something's chewing up your carbon seal it will not last long at that rate!

Thanks for the replies. So I went to the seadoo dealer close to work yesterday and explained the situation. Right away, the service advisor tells me that I am the 3rd person who has a 2013 GTI SE that complained about it. He said the engine needed to be aligned and the seal needed to be replaced on the other skies. Also said the seal needs to be ordered. Will keep you guys posted.

Good info. Maybe a notice will get sent to all dealers and MAYBE customers. That would be nice.

I have had the exact same issue on the same model. Mine had much more carbon than yours does. It's at the dealer now, hopefully I have it back by the weekend.

Has anyone else had this issue on any other ski ?

I'm curious if this specific 2013 may have a common issue. It would be good to know this to help others out.

Mine is at the dealer getting fixed now. They are supposed to replace the carbon seal and align the motor. Will update when I have it hopefully by this weekend as well :) It will be chilly but I still want to ride it. :)

Also - When I initially posted this I had 8 hrs. When I took it to the dealer, it had 12 hrs. At this point, I started to notice water in the hull. Last time I rode it had about 2 qts of water after riding for an hour. I'm assuming it was leaking from the carbon seal.

Maybe this thread should be renamed " 2013 GTi alignment problem" and see if more members reply.
If so then BRP should be notified. Hopefully they have taken notice already from dealers calling in for warranty work on this issue.

Here is what mine looked like.

Do you have an issue with me renaming this to "2013 GTi alignment problem" as Seadoobuddy suggested.
My goal is to see if Seadoo has an on-going consistent issue with a specific model. I think I would also add something like "Grey residue by shaft / hull."

I brought mine in yesterday and the dealer lubed the seal and sent me on my way. It did the same thing immediately. I showed them this thread and they called SD and got approval to replace the seal as SD told them "They had a bad batch" and that SD did not feel engine alignment was an issue but allowed the dealer the additional labor to verify.....

Glad this post was helpful.

Sounding more and more like BRP needs to know about this and give the dealers some guidance.
