Hey All,
Been a while since I've been on this site, but finally got to start my resurrection project of a '91 GT. I'm custom building this ski specifically for our USCG Auxiliary safety patrol OPS for the river and Lake, and am looking forward to getting it done. The original yellow 580 blew a rod when the injection pump failed, so its toast. I have a '93 White 587 motor with 140 psi in both jugs that has never been cracked open from a ski that was salvaged and demo'd.
1) I've read a few threads here on the swap that says the white motor can be used, but the 580 flywheel, stator, etc. need be installed on the white block. What will I run into by doing so? Timing? I recall tapping threads for bolts?? i believe Dr. Honda said something about this?
2) I understand the cooling setup is different/better on the 587, but how do I adapt the hull for the hose in/out differences?
3) PTO Shaft alignment; After installing the motor, I've read about installing the shaft and cranking the starter to align, but what about shimming?
4) The yellow motor had dual carbs that were rebuilt and the cables are still attached with the intake ass'y. The white had a single carb. Can I use the yellow dual intake on the white single OR should I figure out how to adapt the cables for the single carb? Airbox difference??
I know, long winded and a lot of questions. Alright thanks very much in advance for the advice. I know these are old ski's, but when our Government gives us a budget of lemons for equipment, you gotta make lemonade
