xps 800 vs spark

Hello,

I'm preparing to buy my first two jet skis and I'm considering two used XPS800s or two new sparks.

I'm specifically looking at these used:

https://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/boa/5199650037.html

Obviously cost is a big pro for going used but I'm looking for opinions since I am not. Very familiar with either model or jet skis in general. These look like they were maintained well and perhaps would be amore sensible way to start? Are spare parts readily available? I would expect repairs to be better documented online...

Basic pros vs. Cons would be appreciated. Thx

those are nice looking ski's but a tad overpriced IMO, although i'm not that familiar with MI prices.... however i've argued in the past that sometimes overpaying for the right ski and getting lucky with a couple seasons of trouble free riding more than offsets the additional cost. I love the 96 xp, had one just like it and put a lot of hours on it, still kind of miss it, its one of my favorite two strokes. (Gp1300r Yamaha, 96 XP Seadoo, 99 GSX Limited Seadoo in that order)

the 787 is generally considered reliable, you will still have access to plenty of good used parts, relatively easy to work on for those mechanically inclined, pretty easy to diagnose, and lots of proven repair methods are posted on the forums. Those ski's are really only designed for 1 person and there is a bit of a learning curve, but nothing that 90% of the people find troublesome except for limited fuel range, 40ish miles on a full tank (9 gallons) is about all you can safely plan on.

With that said, two sparks will certainly prove to be more reliable, just as fun, and significantly increased fuel range (double) and have a little bit more of a cool factor, and the huge bonus of the warranty, and from what i've seen so far, minimal depreciation...

so... a couple xp's will certainly get you a nice "starter set" that will be an absolute blast to ride, there is minimal depreciation since you're already near rock bottom (especially if you pay to 3K vs 4K) you might invest $150 in a couple set's of hydroturf and some decals and they will be even better looking... (I hate the stock mats)

note: Michigan's season is about over, there WILL be better deals coming up when the weather turns.... but i'l circle back to my opening statement, the right pair of 2 strokes that have been well taken care of will offer a lot more enjoyment, and better value than a troublesome pair where one is always breaking down and ruining a saturday. So going the clearance puppy route isn't always the best unless your the type that enjoys tinkering. Those two you linked look very clean on a quick glance, but trusting the seller is critical as well, good compression, the right oil, zerking the zerks, all parts working like trim, replacement fuel lines, clean rave valves, access for a test ride, etc... all factor into a ski's value and projected reliability.,

bottom line, you can't go wrong either way, the xp will give you lower entry price but higher chance of hassles. I have always suggested that people get in cheap and find out if they really really like the sport before they decide to make an upgrade, no point in spending 11K vs 4K only to find out that the novelty wore off and then you take a hit on the sale.

I've had several friends try it out and decide they'd rather golf, but most of my friends tried it, loved it, and still love it.

It's reall easy... and we dont' need to get into a debate. (Since it's already been done)

Spark:

1) Waranty
2) New
3) Reliable
4) fuel efficient

Used XP:

1) Way faster
2) Cheaper (2+ trailer for less$$)
3) A cult favorite.

I didn't list con's since the other ski's "Pros" cover it.

So... basically... do you need a warranty, because you can't or don't want to work on a ski? Or do you want something faster? Heck... even if you have to put in 2 new motors... you will be at a lower price point.

I've ridden a Spark, I liked it, didn't love it. IMO the Spark rides and handles more like a 96-97GSX than an X4. The X4 is more fun than a Spark, but harder to ride for an extended time.

same thing w/my Tesla ;)

If you're new to water sports, I would go for the Sparks. The XPs are AWESOME if you love quick, nimble, tippy skis and getting wet.

w/the sparks you'll get a warranty, won't burn oil, and still have a great setup.

If you've got the money go sparks. If you want a cheap entrance into the hobby and you don't mind 20 yr old skis that WILL need something fixed sooner than the sparks.....can't beat an X4.

There is no wrong choice here for you. It just matters how much you want to do yourself(time), do you like used or new machines, and how much do you want to spend on the hobby. The Sparks haven't been out all that long to get a the full reports. I would find some people here in the other boards sections and ask how they like them. I have ridden the newer 4-tecs 3 seaters and they move real good, they eat gas 2 but they are fast. I can tell you by me in good old Joliet, IL area on the Kankakee and Illinois River there are way more 2-stokes than 4-stokes on the water. That might also be since we have such a short season a 10+ year machine only have like 100 hours on them or so.

I am enjoying reading the feedbacks. But just having a funny feeling about this guy asking opinions between TWO old XPS800s and TWO BRAND NEW sparks.

Go get the two sparks and happy riding, period. LoL

I think money is the main keyword in here. If you have the budget for two new sparks, go for it, clearly. Otherwise, take the used stuff but only if you are capable of fixing them by yourself.

From a guy who got burned hard by used stuff and not being a mechanics.

<<< Joliet boy here myself... moved to FL 20 yrs ago, but was on the Kankakee recently on a visit, down near Wilmington

Small world.

The sparks are geared for small lake and toying round. They are made for single riding even though you could fit 2-3 people on them I am sure the ride is bad with 2+ people on them. For 2 Sparks lets say you get 90hp and few options you would still be looking around $14000 out the door w/taxes, tiles, plates, trailer, and dealer fees. I would only give that guy $3000 for those 96's unless he has paperwork on new engines it is end of season unless those thing ran great maybe $3300. I like to 2 smokers, but if you never owned PWC you might want to get 2 used ones that run good and see if you like it. 14K is a lot of money to test something out. Try the used one for a year and sell them off and go to Sparks if it works out. You would still end up good with those w 96's selling them in a year.

I saw a Spark last weekend with young guys on it. The passengers kept falling off. If you want to have passengers and go around a large lake, the Spark is not for you also.
