Sooooo while I have my ski completely torn apart and reading through all kinds of Sea Doo threads it seems the carbon seal CAN be problematic.

Mine looked basically brand new when I took it apart. However, is there an upgrade to this system? For instance use the setup the 95XP has that's similar to a Yamaha setup?

If so what parts would that take?

to swap from the carbon ring, you would need the rubber hose part, the bearing seal carrier, and possibly a different driveshaft. honestly so long as you take care of the carbon seal and don't run on the trailer for extended periods, it should be fine. i looked at a couple of 96 gtis, and one of them had worn the carbon seal down almost to the bellows (it was on its second engine, which was down to 110 psi compression, so it likely had at least ~600ish hours on it, maybe more).

another nice thing about the carbon ring is that when it fails it doesn't damage the hull like the bearing carrier does if it seizes to the driveshaft and tears the hull coupler out.

but when it does fail your ski sinks, no?

What does that mean "take care of your carbon ring"? Do what to take care of it? So it's as good as the other option?

The carbon ring WAS the upgrade from the 95 xp style bearing carrier. Whith that being said the bearing carrier you have to grease through the grease fitting every other time you ride. Maintenance. The carbon seal you don't have to maintain.

basically you don't run the ski for more than 5 minutes at a time out of the water. thats it. there are very few cases of catastrophic carbon ring failures on the water, and the likelyhood is probably that the ring was cracked and finally let go on the water causing the rapid leak. i would bet that there are more cases of the carrier seizing to the shaft than there are carbon rings cracking on the water.

Yes....

When the '95 seal pack gives up... it generally rips the fitting out of the hull... and you sink.

There is nothing wrong with the carbon seal. If you use OEM parts, and replace ALL of it... and... you don't run the ski out of the water for extended periods of time... it will last +10 years.

The only reason they seem "Problematic" is because you are reading posts on a chat board. People come here to solve issues... so this place is concentrated "Problems". (get it??)

I like the carbon seal. When they fail... they almost never will allow the ski to sink... and they are maintenance free. WHERE... the '95 seal pack requires greasing after ever ride... and you need to pull the driveshaft, and inspect the seals yearly. (if you don't want your ski to sink)

I get the concentrated posts for sure, BUT figured if there was an upgrade....then why not, right?

Although in this case it doesn't sound like there is. Carry on then. :)
