can someone help me out i have 1997 720 at first it will start up fine but once you remove lanyard to stop and plug it back in ski will not run.if you remove ground wire and reattach it will run again till you remove lanyard then you have to do process all over again.can someone help me thanks.

removing battery ground or unplugging 4 way connector which wire colors are y-y/b-b-b/r pretty much just breaking grounds then plugging lanyard back in

Strange.

OK... this may sound dumb... but when it's running, does pulling the laynard kill the engine? Also... does the battery drain quickly? After it stops, when you put the laynard back on, do you get your beeps? (before pulling the ground)

It sounds to me that the electronics in the MPEM aren't resetting... like it's not powering down.

yes the engine dies when you pull the lanyard,no beeps because it is not electronic lanyardand no the battery does not die is there any way i can check to see if the mpem is resetting itself

All after 1996 have the dss type key, sounds like someone modified the security method and this is why the mpem is not reseting, validate the wiring harness for the year mpem you have.

it is a 1997 gsi the ski was running fine last year the costumer let it sit for the winter so the carbs were gummed up.i rebuilt the carbs and it ran fine for 1 week now this issue came up.the costumer has owned it since new and he said it never beeped when you plugged in lanyard.the thing still will run till you unplug lanyard and plug it back in it wont turn over till you break a ground then plug lanyard back in

The buzzer is in the steering pad, and as said above... 96 was the year they added the security to the lanyard.

Anyway... the buzzers die easy, but you need it to go into the diagnostics mode. (you count the beeps) You can get a replacement from radio shack for $8 and just use the plug from the old one to wire it up. (I would start there)

Otherwise... all I can think of is the ski needs to go to a SeaDoo dealer for a plug in diagnostics, or a re-program on the security. And, since you seem to be a "shop"... I'm sure you don't want to do that.

Just for an FYI... here are the beeps.

****install the lanyard ****

2 short beeps = Normal
1 long beep = bad lanyard contact
4 long beeps = MPEM isn't talking to the CDI
8 short beeps = bad memory. replace MPEM or try to reprogram.
continuous beep = engine overheat.

**** Advanced diagnostics ****

1) press the starter button 5 times, and you should get one beep.
2) install the lanyard
3) press the starter button one more time

no beep and starts = everything is OK
1 long and 1 short beep = lanyard isn't programed
2 short beeps = MPEM can't read lanyard or bad wiring
2 long beeps = wrong lanyard or bad wiring
3 short beeps = a ground in the DESS system.

this may sound stupid but even if the lanyard is just a on off switch as there is no electronics in it will it still beep.like the lanyard does not have to be programed to the ski

Unless your customer modified the ski... there is a chip in the lanyard. There are only 2 contacts... but there is a chip. If you use a non-chip laynard... you would get one long beep, and the ski would not start.

As far as a non programed lanyard... If the DESS system was never activated, then any lanyard will start the ski... but it would still beep. All the SeaDoo's, from the factory, had the DESS system active. Once it was activated, it can not be dissabled... only new lanyards programmed to it. The only way you can get a non programmed MPEM is to buy a new factory MPEM and ask for it to be not activated, and install it yourself.
