where do i go to learn things

I NEED to learn how fix things on my skis! Im going to this mechanics shop to pick up 1 of 2 skis that have been there for over 6 weeks (he only does this part time, daytime job is motorcycle mechanic at a shop, they stopped selling skis so he does it on his own) but he wont let me come in to watch and learn things or help by handing wrenches and what not. So my question is where can i go to learn, at least the harley site has a dvd set i bought that goes over everything(not cheap-but has paid for itself already) mine isnt even done and im thinking in the 800$ range for a top end job. to high? parts on order for three weeks already! How do i learn it myself to prevent this in the future? thanks

I'm with you about a place to learn about Seadoo and other brands.
The marine training school are too much $$$ and train mostly for boats. UTI.com.

Wish that Seadoo had a DVD out for learning purposes.

I think you have the 787 engine or 951??

you can send engine out for rebuild to fullbore or just the top end.

Compression gauge and socket set should be all you need at this point. If you are willing to spend $800.00 on a top-end you might as well send the thing off to SBT or the like and have them do it. The whole engine on a GSX exchanged with new installation gaskets is $1500.00 with a 2 year warranty. Exchange top-ends are $500.00 If you can work on V-twins, these engines should be cake. $800.00 too much? I don't know, is he boring the cylinders and installing new pistons? Is anything broke/cracked? Does the head need to be trued? Too much depends on how much work needs to be done, and how much having someone else do it is worth to you.

I could have my car's engine/transmission pulled, and replaced with an exchange for $4500.00 Am I doing it myself because it is not worth it? No, I'm doing it because I have more time than money.

All the info you need, FSMs, advice, tricks and tips, are on this forum. You have to search a bit some times, but it is there.

these ski's are not hard to work on, so with some tools and this site, you can learn whatever you want about these ski's.....the different systems just takes time to figure out but once you do, its easy then......

I don't consider myself a professional by any means. But through a lot of help from this forum, past experience on motorcycles, and general mechanical knowledge I have managed to keep my skis and several other running, and not bragging running at close to peak performance.

The concept is really pretty simple, you have a 2-stroke, running a pump. Pretty much a direct connection. From your list of toys it looks like you have had experience with motorcycles so this should be a snap for you, you don't even have to mess with a transmission.

The best thing to do is download a service manual for you ski, dig in and get your hands dirty, there are guys here ready and willing to help.

But!Get a very good workbench that you can spread stuff out.Don't work cramped.Lay it all out so you can see what you are doing next.Measure everything lots more than once.

Not to be the "Fly in the ointment"... but I agree with your mechanic. Most of the time, it takes longer to get a job done when someone is in the shop. So... 99% of the time, I don't let people hang out. There are a few exceptions. When my buddies drop by... I let them stay... but then again... if I ask them to leave because I'm busy... they understand.

With that said... I don't take in work that I can t get done in a few days. So... in your case... I would have never taken your ski, and let it sit for 6 weeks.


Anyway, the best place to learn is right here. Get the service manual for your ski... and rip into it. Then... when you don't understand... ask a question. I'm sure we will get you answered in less than 24 hrs.
