what year Seadoo do i look for to not get the rotay valve ?

loved the power and gas sipping of my 1990 yellow motor, but it is got bad crank seals, so is tossing blue oil on the plugs from the disc drive -still got lots of compression (oh well) - dont want to mess with it anymore, what year did Seadoo officially get away from the genre ? i dont want to go to a different brand, (to get reeds or a piston port motor, dont know if piston ports even exist anymore)- the horsepower of the yellow motor always made me smile, so i dont think i need a lot more, but the skis are heavier now(?) so a bit more power is ok , - how old a ski can i look for that doesnt have that rotary valve? thanks

Im not sure why you are worried about the rotary valve. They are very easy to time if thats what your worried about, ive never heard of somebody worried about a bombardier because of the rotary valve, they are great engines
 
more moving parts and the seals are why my doos not dooing - thought id simplify with reeds- yes it is a fast motor but they gave up on it about 1997? not sure why- assumed it had too much trouble so bombardier went with reeds (edit- my skis a 1990)

There are still center crank seals on the reed engines, that is where the oil bath is for the counterbalance drive gears. You can't escape it.

951's have reed valves, if that's what you're looking for. However 951's are not long lasting motors, around 200hrs. If you're still running a 1980 SeaDoo you shouldn't have any complaints.

If you want a reliable motor with adequate power you should be looking at a 717, in my opinion the most reliable motor SeaDoo ever used.

If you want us to recommend a ski tell us what type of riding you do, how many people ride, etc.

Your ski lasted 23 years before you needed any major engine work, and your complaining? If I could get anything mechanical to last 23 years, I would say I won on that purchase. They didnt give up on it, they made the 720 engine up into the 2000's if I believe, they stopped making them I believe when they went all 4 stroke. There is absolutely nothing wrong with rotary valves, ask anyone on this site, the most popular engines in the 2 stroke forum are the 720 and 787 engine which are both rotary valve, they are a great engine, nothing really major to go wrong, and certainly the rotary valve is at the very bottom of the lists of any problems they might have...
 
If you really like your ski why not just do the SBT motor swap, its a pretty reasonable price for the 587's. That way you'll keep everything you like and have a brand new motor that you know will last for years.

agree with Whiskey, if you like your ski, do a motor swap, its $495 and your back in biz, much less than the cost of upgrading a whole ski.
 
Also and this is probably a mute point, because you can't argue with success. That engine should be in the SeaDoo museum.

It sounds to me that you are using the wrong oil. You should be using mineral or synthetic blend API-TC, most TCW3 is blue or blueish green and is the wrong oil.

I love all the dealers that tell you to use the blue stuff. It's a great way for them to make more money :)

The ski freaking says not to use that on the oil fill tube!

ahhah- ill remember to not use the tcw3, my oil fill spout doesnt say what to use , i figured tcw3 is a clean low ash oil suitable for new 2 stroke outboards etc marine motors- anyway, im thinking about having a dealer install the fresh motor, i never quite figured out the process of measuring and shimming the motor mounts - will look for API-TC- i removed the oil pump and blanked it off so the oil tank will just be feeding the rotary gear
 
the local Seadoo dealer told me yamaha is the best PWC, called the rotary valve a "snowmobile motor" that bombardier tossed in a PWC, and its not happy in a pwc- "just because admiral byrd at the north pole needs the rotary valve gears submerged in oil at 60 below zero doesnt make it a good idea for a PWC at 100 degrees ambient temp" - unquote- (i might not want that dealer to work on it)
 
you guys have learned me to look forward to fixing my SP, and buying some more! i found a couple 657s with a trailer and a couple XPs (white 580 motor)? with a trailer-- i may buy them all!

Yes the parent company makes both products, but why would a SEA-DOO dealer tell you to buy another brand? I'd post their address/name on SEA-DOOs facebook...
