I can tell your right handed. that it's most likely a 951 engine, and that you took the photo above a piece of paper in your parent's basement.

and it almost looks like the piston hit it.

we need to see the ceramic

I can't tell a dam thing.

Bad angle, and blurry. BUT... as above... it looks crushed... but it could be the angle.

That plug looks hit!.Wrong plug.Engine heads shaved,Crank stroked.Rave valves gone loose.Broken ring piece. Some thing loose has hit it and maybe shot out the exhaust port

 Congratulations, this is one of the best answers I've seen on this forum. I'm happy to see people with a sense of humor.

yheap its hit

so yea something did hit it but WHAT and WHY?? i saw 2 small marks on the arm there thats also making contact with the "electrode"? when i took the plug out.
so far this is what i have done (in that order)...
cranked the engine trying to expell foreing object in cyl. and listened for wierd noises.
put diferent plugs and ran fine afterwards (20-30min run)
compresion on both cyl was fine (150psi each)
took the RAVE valve for that cyl out and didnt see any missing pisses or anything loose.

as far as i know its a stock engine from SBT that was running fine.
one thing i did notice was that the small hose on the exhaust, the 1 that vents to the ouside on the hull, right after the cylinders by the choke cable was pinched for that run.

man this worries me a lot and i'm going nuts trying to figure this out. thank you all!
edit---> also could the piston travel that far up to meet the plug like that? if it wasnt the piston then it was a pretty random hit by another object. weird thing is no rattles, vibrations or noises out of ordinary.

Just judgeing the wash is somewhat white, indicating a rich mixture. IMO Threads/seal ring indicate it was not in torque spec.

You guys missed that there had been a staple in the paper, it had been folded and a fly had landed on that paper within the last 7.35 seconds.... give or take a few seconds.

Why did you pull the plug? Was the engine running fine? Was there a noise? How long have you had this engine? (how many hours?) How long had it been since you pulled the plug before and was there an event that made you remove it and look at it?

If it was hit while in the engine... it was a foreign part. The piston can't get that high. Even is you shaved the head... the piston would hit the squash band section of the head first.

If that came out of one of my engines... I would pull the head off, and check for other damage. If you cracked the piston crown at the rings.... you may have a ticking time bomb. Opening it up may save you a melt-down.

wtf man

why is the damage so consentrated to that small area on the left side on both piston and head?? i got no idea what happened. something must have come loose from within the engine/exhaust/ intake at the end scince i had about 4 short runs before it stop firing in that cyl.

there seemed to be a little water on both cyl i dont understand why. and what about those irregular burn marks on top, is that normal?
would the dings and dents cause preignition and detonation so bad that it could self destruct if i ride like that?

this is messed up i feel ill. oh well at least i got to jump some waves this summer.

The water probably came from a leaky head gasket.

I would pull the jugs and replace that piston. It could crack. The head is OK, unless it twisted.

ok so the update is as fallows... engine is out of the xp to be rebuilt early next year. cleaned the fuel selector valve and replaced the tempo fuel lines with gates barricade hoses from napa. i was looking for goodyear hoses but its a pita trying to locate by the ft. and the gates ones look pretty high quality + the tech at napa wave me a lifetime warranty printout from gates. anyone with a '99 xpl you only need 7ft 5/16 and about 10ft 1/4 hose. no green stuff in lines but the reserve on the selector valve had a dried up plug so i cleaned that and made sure its flowing nice now.

also took the foot mats out...to be replaced with hydro-turf mats...

yhes and yhes its got reeds and raves valves...

... but when dealing with this kinds of problems its best to ask "why" at least 5 times to get to the root. so lets see, why was the piston and plug hit?

-because the wrist pins broke loose. why did the wrist pins came loose?
-because the wrist pin cage broke? why did the cage brake?
-my guess would be because lack of proper lubrication (lean condition). why was there a lack of proper lubrication?
-because the carburetor gasket was reused several times developing a faulty seal. and why was the carburetor gasket reused several times....welll u know the rest duhh!:(

Well, at least you know whom to blame.

sorry for your loss. But now you know what to do to repair it.
