Guys,

This past weekend a bunch of us went out on Crystal river for some cruising and my son wanted to get in a little wake-boarding. The weather was in the Mid-70's on Sunday and was beautiful!

Some may recall, I recently replaced my impeller with a Solas and also replaced the wear ring. A on water test following the work proved a significant improvement in performance. This past weekend however I experienced severe cavitation again out of the hole. I had to feather the throttle to get my son out of the water and eventually the boat would hook up and pull well but the holeshot is really bad...again. NO I HAD NO DEBRIS in the pump and I never sucked up anything.

Could the wear ring be gone in such short order? Could I be sucking air from the engine compartment via the shaft or ride plate or inlet grate fasteners?

Craig

Sorry to hear about that Craig. I don't think the wear ring should be worn in that short of time without an outside influence. Have a good look in the pump and see if the ring is chewed up on only one side. This could be due to a worn pump bearing, or a warped pump (I remember one fellow last spring that had the dealer replace the ring and then told him a week later the pump was warped when it went bad again). This is just speculation though, as I don't know enough about the 4tec pump to give you any common faults. I'm sure someone else will have better advice shortly.

Aaron,

Interesting what you suggested. When I replaced the wear ring I did notice that there was one side(lets say 6 0 clock) was worn much greater than say (12 o clock). Maybe your on to something!

Craig also when I pull any seadoo pump, I always seal the seams inside the pump and any rough areas with silicone and be sure it has a smooth ramp as such going into and coming out of he pump...This allows no friction points of air to roll around the area of the pump with water being forced through. I do the grate and ride plate too. When I did my own wear rings I found about a hand full of sloppy silicone left by the factory in both my pumps and adjoining systems, that didn't help on acceleration. Use a razor blade to remove any high spots and add new silicone and be sure it is smooth.

Karl,

Next time I'll do the service at your house to insure I am not missing anything. My guess is either I'm sucking air from the bilge somehow or I've got a mis-alignment issues some way. Its at Barneys right now. They will be replacing my electronic instrument cluster(bubbles in the black silk screening), some swim platform gelcoat cracks and the cavitation issue. lets hope I'm fixed up and done with service after this.

Hopefully Barney's will correct all the problems. Sometimes the small overlooked things can cause problems.

I sorta got the same thing when I swapped to a Swirl impeller.

My problem is that the impeller is sucking so hard that it pulls air from the engine bay past the carbon seal. (not sure how your boat is set up, so it may not be the same on yours).

But after I did the pump/ring repair/replace, if I nail it full throttle, it will cavitate and "spin out" for a few seconds.

I might be able to fix it with a new rubber boot against the seal

Currently, it still pulls my 190 lb butt up immediately, so I see no need to fix it.
