OK, question - How to ground the temp sensor?
I looked at mine and the metal connector is up in the rubber cover, do you attach a wire then touch the engine block to test?

From bill86
Yes. a bare headbolt or one of the grounding tongs on magnito houseing works. You could stick a paper clip or short wire up there.

OK -Yesterday I winterized the ski and plug the sensor wire off and held a larger gauge wire in there and touch several spots - engine block, bolts, bare manifold spot, etc....
The wire wasn't long enough to touch the grounding tongs.

I didn't hear any beeps, so what's wrong (besides me)?

Does the beeper work when you install the lanyard? Also, you need the lanyard installed when grounding the temp sensor wire.

SDB,
I JUST did this the other day after Bill told us how to do it...
I LITERALLY just took the plug off of the motor and slid it onto one of the sparkplug grounding tabs...
I don't know if you did this or not, but the Motor also has to be running...
While you do it, also check this out...
When i did this, the TEMP LIGHT on the gauge also lit up, telling me its working...
And as MINNE stated, I also checked it by cutting the buzzer off (I had a spare i was looking to replace it with anyway), splicing the wires back, and touching it to any 12v battery and it squealed like a pig, so mines up and running....

And mines a 96 spx, and Bill said that for my year, when i put the lanyard on, i wouldn't hear the two beeps...(I thought i was supposed to, hence the reason i thought i had a bad buzzer all along)
And Louie said that 1996 was a transition year, where SOME 1996's had certain features that other 1996's didn't have...and I know yours is a 1996, so that's something you might wanna think about...
Hope it works for ya...

thanks.
It was not running when I tested it.
The lanyard was off and then on when I tested it.
I have a new beeper already.
Being a 96, the post is probably bad also. I don't want another from a 96 to replace it, but a new one is $60 and I'm out of work.
What newer model would have the same post?

I'll buy from Minnetonka or 96spxx???(his bro) if possible.

why wouldn't you get the same one if you could?
Also, i'll check my box of tricks when i get home and see if i've got one for ya....its not on the hull at my house, but it may be in one of the three boxes of spare parts i got alog with it...
I'll let ya know...

Well, what I've read from Louie is either they go bad and totally dont work, or if they're intermittent but still working, you can just clean the post with a light abrasive cleaner...
