My starter professionally installed pos has broken in 2? I need a replacement. Anyone use sbt starters. Are they any good?image.jpg

Go OEM with the starter.. many many complaints on here about aftermarket.

Yes for the few bucks more it's worth it. I heard a rebuilt oem starter is batter than an aftermarket new one

Only thing an sbt starter is good for is a anchor

Some have had good luck with the SBT starter. But as a general rule, nothing is as good as an OEM starter. Even a used OEM is better than a new aftermarket.

Never buy one !!!!

Just rebuild the oem !!!
(not to mention, it's cheaper)

OK, did I say that loud enough for other people reading this?

The problem is I don't have the original to rebuild. Like I said I had this put in last year and was told its oem which is obviously bull. So with that in mind is there really a big difference between the oem and say one from sbt? Is the torque different or just the quality of metal?

The one from SBT is aftermarket.

They do what yours did. Or the brushes in them wear out within a season. Buy an oem on eBay and rebuild it.

As others have said all aftermarket starters are lesser quality even the SBT. They are all made overseas using cheaper bearings, brushes, metal parts and magnets. They produce less torque, wear out faster and sometimes break like yours.

Buy a used one from Minnetonka4me. He will put a brush kit in it if it needs its and it will be two things,, GOOD and and OEM...

Yeah I get that it's after market and everyone says they are junk. I'm just curious as to why. Is the metal cheaper or is the torque lower than the oem?

Well... the why is the busted in half shaft.

It's really everything. We've seen a bunch break like the one in your pic. We've seen the windings throw. We've seen the magnets crack (and grabs the arm) we've seen the copper plates on the comm delaminate. And so on.

Basically... they are Chinese. The company's who produce them can only COPY products, and don't understand the product. and they are just poor quality. The OEM, Japanese starters are ENGINEERED by a company who has been making starters for a VERY long time, and know what they are doing. AND, supply starters to dang near all the big OEM's out there. (Toyota, Honda, SeaDoo/SkiDoo/Evenrude/BRP, Polaris, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Hyundai, Kia, Kubota, Chevy, Dodge, and so on...) FYI, the OEM is Nippon Denso.

The OEM starters are so well built... I can generally take a 20 year old OEM... take it apart... buff the Comm... clean out all the old carbon dust... replace the brushes... and they work good as new. (FYI, you can use the import brush kit. they are fine in an OEM starter)

10 years ago they used to be OK....now days....There is no such thing as a OK aftermarket starter.

Back in the day... there were a few good companies like Goki. Not to mention, they were USA built... But they were "Cheap". They were just less than the OEM's... and they generally made more torque.

The last Goki I was able to put my hands on was over 15 years ago. I think I paid $180 for it. But the OEM was $280. (for a Kawi JS550)
