Seat cover material selection and old cover removal

Just purchased a used GTI seat requiring a new cover. There are a few replacement materials to use and one I am not familiar with.Carbon fiber. The pics on the website make it seem as if it is a durable weave. Is it durable, waterproof, and are there any positive/negatives associated with this material? Or is it no better than vinyl and is just an alternate material.Also i just noticed a thread that mentioned having to slice the old cover off, is this difficult and can a layman easily accomplish this?

First of all I'm not familiar with using carbon fiber as a seat cover. I sorta figure marine vinyl will last 15-20 years, so I really never saw the need for anything else. I wouldn't slice the old cover off, remove it by removing the old staples, when replacing use stainless steel staples.

CF is probably just a look-alike weave and my guess would be that it will fade and look like ass in a few years. The black colors fade fast - at least in our sun - so I would avoid them.

Years ago, I was able to custom order a seat from Jettrim for my RX and they had a myriad of colors and materials. One small band in the sides I did not use marine vinyl on is wearing now and the black is faded to light grey after a few years of use. I looked at their site and the selection is pretty dismal now.

Seems these folks are making some decent products, and you can build a custom seat. I didn't dig deep into the descriptions, but except for one "non-slip" color choice, they all seem to be marine vinyl. Priced way lower than Jettrim as well.

Having problems posting so if this comes as a double, my apologies. Your seat came out awesome, the price is definitely in my range, but can it be stretched over a hump without leaving a hump or stretched to far on the hump making it thin in spots and bunched up in other areas. I am covering a 96 gti touring seat. thanks

Thanks for the reply. I did look at that site still not sure of which direction to go in. Another responder directed me to a site that has great results as far as his seat, but may not accomodate mine and it is a stretch seat rather than fitted to my gti hump.

I was more or less just giving you what the CF looked like in vinyl. There are a few companies that already make fitted covers for seats and that is usually the safer option, especially for seats with many contours. I have a few hours just into that seat alone. Hydro turf makes seat covers as well as black tip.

there is a guy in bradenton, right near you that does awesome seat covers, can do a custom scheme, single color, or something similar to what you see on the market. PM me if you want his contact info, his name is Chris Johnson, he has done several seats for me and they came out awesome, and honestly, his prices are very very reasonable.
