I have a 1996 seadoo gtx i am working on for someone and when they bought the seadoo it was able to start without the dess key. Does not look like anything was messed with in the wiring all the way back to the ecu. biggest problem is that this is a safety issue. can the DESS post fail in the on position? any test i can do to verify this or any other suggestions?

Thanks

Unplugged the dess harness with engine running and it did not stop. Any chance someone could have programmed this to work without a key at all?

I'll admit this is a new one on me. My 96GTI has a new, in 1998 MPEM which was never programmed to a key, so it will work with any lanyard, but it won't work with out one. Let's see if we can get an opinion from an expert Minnetonka4me

Lol you got me guys I've never seen it either! Does the start stop kill the motor?

I don't think I would ride it like that, at the minimum put in a kill switch with a lanyard.

I think that circuit in the mpem is screwed up. If it was the post it would have quit when he unhooked it.

Replace it before something bad happens.. I have good used ones with matching keys available.

Yeah, I wouldn't ride it. I am fixing this seadoo for someone (new fuel lines and carb rebuilt) but I have already told him that I would do the carb work unless the saftey lanyard works. So just trying to sort this out if I can first.

will have to double check what the gauges do while running. if you just hit the start stop button quickly the gauges do come on but does not read anything just lights up every lcd digit and all led lights. so probably points more toward a bad mpem.

To tell you the truth if the gauge does that you most likely have a bad gauge too. The MPEM doesnt really have anything to do with the gauge other than feeding it 12v power when the switched power comes on.
