SBT engine swap

Well aster getting the right bolts today (got the wrong ones yesterday), fighting with the flywheel, breaker bar, one crew letting go, heat gun, then torch, hammering, tightening more freakin hammering, took a chip out of my magneto housing, more tightening and hammering it finally came off. My good that was freakin stupid tight.

Anyways... I notice some of the flywheels teeth are worn down. probably why my starter has stuck twice. But i'm sure my engine didn't help with that. Question... Should I replace it? If so, does that screw up my timing?

Thx for all your help along the way.

on the 951 the flywheel is set with a woodruff key, so.. they only go on ONE way... but I know more about the 951 than the 787, sorry.

is the 99 SPX a dual carb? I see that in 97 it gets the 787, but only had 1 carb?

It had 2 carbs.

The correct flywheel puller makes fast work of flywheels....ones that bolt into the rotor bolts c0ck and make it a biatch. I got a RAD racing puller kit off ebay a few years ago and its the best tools Ive used BY FAR!! Good luck finding another one though...lol

Yep... what Minitonka said. When I use a generic puller... I grease everything... heat the hub... and go at it with an impact.

Thumper, if your still wrestling with the flywheel, I used the one you rent at Partsource, and stopped at brafasco to get fasteners that thread into flywheel. I too am at the cottage but will be heading home today. I still have the fasterners in my Seadoo Tool box so will post up. BTW if you need any seadoo tools engine alignment tool/rotary vavle timing degree wheel etc. Let me know I'm in belleville ..

*Edit ... sorry just read #29*

Having the right tools always helps.

Thx bmann, I just bought the $20 one from Canadian tire since I didn't know when I would be back that way.

Are you doing an engine swap too? Thx for the offer for the tools. I will contact you if I need something. Appreciate it!

Now off to building a box to ship it.

Any comments on the flywheel teeth bring worn? If I got a new one would that screw up my timing?

It's been a couple years since I did the teardown on the 787, but I recall that it can only be installed one way. Maybe post up a pic of the worn teeth and we can chime in on whether to replace or not.

Ya it looks like only one way it can go on. I will thx, when I get home, just dropped off my old one to send to sbt.

I sent my rotary valve cover too. Had some minor scratches and 2 gouge. So figured screw it and get a new one from them too. I want no more problems after this lol. With my luck, ya right.

So my flywheel... what do you think?

And my benches full of parts lmao!

If that's the cottage "shop" thats pretty impressive .. lolz.

Re: timing gear: If I recall the only thing running off the flywheel gear is the starter. I think that flywheel gear is okay personally, how is the starter gear looking? I think you'll find the starter gear worse as it's the "wear" part or "sacrificial alloy" between the mesh.

BTW ... when my two 787s popped in my 98' speedster I investigated SBT but went with the BRP rebuild centre out of quebec to save on shipping ... if you don't mind my asking what are you into for a 787 from sbt? ... (ALL IN ... frieght, duties etc) ... pm me if you don't want it public.

Thx.. that's just my small bench lol. There is another one full of tools and crap twice as long on the back side if the garage, then a wood work shop even bigger in the basement lmao. My old mans shop... He loves to build stuff.

Ya it is only the start flywheel. Last season I bought an sbt one since my oem one was worn. The teeth on it are a but chewed up, but not to bad. Just don't want it to get stuck again, such a pain to pull it and put it back in. for $60 if it doesn't affect timing (which I still don't know) I would just get a new one.

Damn didn't know that. Least with sbt 2 year warranty which is nice. you can see the price on sbt site, and shipping so far has only cost me just over $100. We will see what happens when it gets shipped back.

Changing the flywheel will not effect timing. Its just there to gear the starter, spin magneto and oil pump. Timing is the rotary valve, and your getting yours re-machined anyways. If you need the degree wheel to time let me know. I'm working in Toronto at least twice a week these days and can meet you up near 401.

No offense but I think you are incorrect. The magnetic dome thing attached to the flywheel is sync to the flywheel, to the mpem, or something like that. all I know is you aren't suppose to remove that piece from the flywheel unless you mark it because it will screw up the timing. i'm just not 100 percent if you can match it up or something.

Yes in the rotary valve timing, and thanks for the offer I need one, i'm just not down that way for a bit, but if things change that would be awesome! Thx.

Where is your cottage?

No offense taken .. your right. Sorry man forgot all about ignition timing .... duhhh have another beer. Have you got the shop manual for the 787 it covers everything you need to know.

Lol... Ya been thru it 5 times lol. If replaced timing has to be done. Just wondering if anyone knows if some how you can line it up with the old one and be ok.

Anyone? Doc you out there? Lol.

Well my new engine is on it's way, should be here Monday :) Then I get to see if I can put it back together lol. I also got a new RV wheel and cover, which they installed, so that shouldn't be an issue, if it ever was.

The only question I can think of right now is the copper gasket on the exhaust. I have removed and reinstalled the exhaust before, but I never did anything with the copper gasket. I thought I read somewhere that you heat it up? Is this right? Should I put it in the oven or something, to what temp?

I never did hear anything about the timing with a new flywheel, so guess I will stick with the one I have, and hope with the new engine, better/quicker starts so not to get the starter gear and flywheel stuck anymore.

Thanks again for everyone's help thru this.

NEW ENGINE!

engine here, and install beings. 787 didn't have the woodruff key, does it? Didn't see it on my other one and it doesn't show up in the manual when looking at parts.
